Just passing through a while back, stopped by a place a lot of you are probably familiar with. Didn't have a whole lot of time and had to move quick, need to go back and see the rest some time... And get some better shots of the parts I already saw, really disappointed with most of the ones I got and lots of them were out of focus for some reason... Ghosts perhaps? The History: A now abandoned Mental Health Facility. It once housed 3,200 patients, operated for well over 100 years, and originally consisted of 300 acres of lakefront property. Nearly 300 people lost their jobs when it finally closed it's doors for good in 2012. The facility gained recognition for it's "Therapeutic Village" which housed 240 residents in cottages (1960's). The village had a store, clinic, library, swimming pool and chapel. A few years later it created the "Learning Lab", a GED prep and vocational learning facility that catered to patients and staff alike (1970's). While this Institution had its fair share of horrible incidents... It attempted, and succeeded, at being an innovative facility centered around helping the community and the region at large. Though many buildings have been demolished in the 90's, and the original building burned in the 1920's, there are still multiple buildings (both old and new) that remain on the campus. And one active building which houses a small (14 employees) placement office for the State mental health system.

This place is still around? I think i read somewhere that this place was supposed to be demolished a year ago. The building with all the different kinds of decay in different wings was a fun building.

Not sure where you would have read that, every article I have ever read states that there isn't money in the budget for demolition. It was still standing a couple of months ago when I drove through town. But as soon as they have money, this place will be top of the list for demo and the other buildings will follow. There is talk of renovation and re-purposing whats left of the Kirkbride and a couple of other buildings. But only time will tell if this is what happens. There is a much heavier police presence than there once was, probably due to the large amount of activity in the park and the fact that the police use the buildings for training now: http://www.uer.ca/...=1&threadid=114754

I think I read that the city wants to turn most of the property into more park. Maybe they need more baseball fields. That main building will not get demoed from what I remember. Did you get a chance to check out the hospital in town while you were there?

The big hospital (if it's the same one) has been under deconstruction/demolition/renovation for quite some time. I went and checked it out one night between security patrols (no photos from that explore), great view from the roof @ night.
