Built in 1954, this small, decrepit flour mill a block south of Nucor Steel in southwest Seattle produced Stone Ground Mills cereal starting in 1995 or ’96. The main building was two stories tall, built of “low quality” masonry. It was sold in 2006 and fell into disuse.

I visited the ruin in 2010; it looked pretty intact, although the tanks were leaning and corroded and lush moss was colonizing the north side loading dock. I wasn’t able to go inside; but the exterior made a fascinating subject for photography.

The Google Maps street image date stamped July 2011 shows that the ruin was still there in 2011. A February 4, 2012 article in the West Seattle Blog reported that it was about to be demolished to make way for a parking lot. But Google Map’s satellite view copyrighted 2014 still shows the flourmill. Yesterday I checked the site; the wonderful crumbling masonry building and its tanks are gone. The base of one wall remains, perhaps to serve as a retaining wall. The steel shed in the back is now active and well secured.

Stone Ground Mills continues to operate from a location in Kent.

Too bad! I always loved that little spot. I think around 2010 was when I was there last, as well, and have always been curious.

These are the only photos I have of the place..
