update to the Beetle epic... i posted this in the Other forum yesterday in the thread relating to someone looking for a new car. Figured it should go here as a fitting epilogue to this epic. I edited for time and content adding a little more detail here.

I stopped at Garvey Volkswagen in Glens Falls NY tuesday afternoon. They had only TWO Beetles on the lot, the rest were Jettas and Passats. One Beetle was a black convertible with an automatic. The other was this awful baby blue entry coupe... with an automatic. I spoke with the salesman about getting the one I was interested in. The salesman, who was a colossal douche, kept trying to sell me a Kia Forte and didn't not want to get on his computer to find a reef blue sporty Beetle. Apparently, those are the only two Beetles left in the known universe. (eyeroll) In retrospect, I probably should've talked to the manager, but I was pretty worked up over the whole thing. I don't remember car salesmen being this big of a douche.

So, no, I'll be staying with my paint-challenged Chevrolet.

Wow, I can't believe how that dealer treated you. It's like they didn't want a sale. The dealers around here would do anything for a sale. That doesn't mean they're not douches, but if you ask them for a car they'll make sure you don't leave without one.

And I wouldn't hit a dog in the butt with a Kia.

this isn't the first time I have gotten the weenie from a Garvey-owned dealership. I was looking at a Hyundai Tiburon GT V6 back in 2005 after I got the shaft on a car I had ordered. Guy looked right at me and tells me that I can't afford and then walks away.

maybe it's like Ringo Starr said, 'it's just me face'.

and it wasn't like I was climbing out of a primer and rust Kia Sephia! I was getting out of a two year old Cruze that still looked like a new car.

It would have felt fantastic.

I had a former boss (of one day... From a Subaru dealership 9 years ago) call yesterday to borrow an axle socket...

"Tell Jack and his collection of fingernail clippings to go fuck himself!"

Yes, he kept his fingernail clippings.

more Beetle epic-ness... Are you sitting down? Good. Prepare yourself... I stopped at the aforementioned Garvey VW again today as they had a couple of more Beetles on the lot. Of course the salesman pounced on me before I could get away, so I figured meh what the fuck. I told him I was interested in a Reef Blue Beetle R-Line with a manual transmission and sunroof. He said he had an R-line in the showroom, so I follow him in... it was actually the color I wanted but an automatic. GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR! I no like autospastic transmission. So he says, I can get one in a manual. Then I counter, I would be interested in one tier lower even as long as it was a manual, had a sunroof, color interior and a decent stereo. So, Wednesday I have an appointment to drive a new Beetle.

Not one fucking word from any of you or I will my minions kill you all.

we have not talked payments or even trade in yet, so don't get all hearts and flowers on me. I don't NEED a new car, I merely WANT a new car... that is all the difference here. I can walk away from this deal if I don't like the numbers and I have a gut feeling that they might not be there since I have only had Le Cruze since 2012.

ok... had a doctors appntment on wednesday, so I ended up driving the car today... it was a Volkswagen Beetle 1.8L-turbo in Denim Blue.
things I liked... the car was roomy, the colored bits on the dash and steering column were a nice touch, seats were comfortable and really held you in them. Gauges were easy to read. The engine seems competent, but wasn't as gutsy as I had hoped for. I chalk that up to having only 32 miles on the odometer. The gearbox seemed a little vague, but this is not an R-Line or GSR. The A/C was quick to cool the car down as well, even at 92F ambient with 90% humidity.

Things I did not like... The color. It's way too girly for me, but was the only one of the hardtops with a manual shift. I also didn't like that it was only a 5speed. Also, the Beetle is not available with a sunroof which chaps my ass. It also does not have a USB port (which my Cruze does) and didn't come with a wing (shut up- like it) or aluminum wheels. I have to call the salesman back on Monday afternoon to see if he found a Reef Blue 1.8L T with the options I want. If so, then we'll talk numbers.

Any input? Feedback?
Basically, I am looking at Bandi for insight on reliability issues regarding these cars. It seems everyone you talk to has an opinion on Volkswagen. I want facts.

Other than that, it seemed like an enjoyable car. Oh and is there is aftermarket for that engine?

They're available with a sunroof- not much of one, but they do exist.

As for the 1.8, it's a BRAND new engine, but I've yet to see a VW engine without aftermarket go fast bits available after a month.

The Beetles have been great as far as reliability. We had some power window issues when they first came out, but this was fixed pretty quickly.

(Also- the 2.0T has a nice, tight 6 speed manual.)

...and the rear wing kinda makes the new Bug a bit more awesome.

(And they're available with a multimedia port with a USB and iPod hookup)
