There's an old building over there that has a lot of historical relevance. It's been visited by more than a few taggers, and one guy made this giant two-storey piece on the outside. I know who he is and we don't get along. When I visited, I discovered that he'd used the interior of the building to practice his tag (visible here in the lower right), and there were rooms where it was nothing but his tag over and over again. http://www.uer.ca/...cs/norm/328254.jpg Same guy did both. Later, one of the members of his group told me they weren't urban explorers so they didn't need to pay attention to any ethics or rules. Shortly after that, they had a party in a storm drain during a rainstorm and were almost washed out into the river.

Karma is a bitch. Obviously they have no common sense either.
It doesnt matter how you die. But only how you live.
It's all vandalism. Unless the owner requests it. Then it is just owner approved vandalism. Looks like shit anywhere, any time, and makes any place look like an uncivilized ghetto. Sorry to say it, but anyone over 30 that thinks otherwise, needs to get a job... Neko.

Yup. At a certain age you learn to stop drawing on the wall with a crayola.

Bahahahahahahahaha!!!!! In your special case, we'll make an exception!

oh man.. that's just WRONG...

Very true, I agree...

I think Graffiti is okay on the street, but I don't like it in abandoned buildings. It takes away the mysterious feeling that abandoned buildings have.

I think graffiti, if done well, is great. It gives the eye something pleasing to look at. I think if more cities started a program to commission street art, that'd be a great thing. However, tagging doesn't float my boat, especially in this case. Those folks did that for one reason only, it'd make news. Destroying something that's been there a while, that no one else felt the need to tag, is egomaniacal. I agree with Ed, a caning is in order. As far as tagging and graffiti in abandonments, I hate it. I like my locations destroyed by time and nature, not some stupid asshole with a can of spray paint who, oftentimes, can think of nothing better to do than paint a dick or call someone a fa**ot. However, I know my not liking it isn't going to change it.

When I first saw the link to the article, I thought it was going to be this story again. I mean, who the hell tags a dead whale?! http://www.philly....one_perverted.html
Posted by -Rio- I believe that cities should be more open about graffiti. They should even go as far as create space for it. embracing them instead of resisting. Perhaps it would reduce the number of graffiti on unwanted / private proprieties.

Philly has (had?) a cool program where kids picked up on tagging were given the option of joining a city run art program instead of fines/serving time for the crime. They got mentored by artists and worked on huge murals all over the city. One of my favorite things about visiting Philly is all the public art, and the murals are a huge part of that.

I'm not your mom, but I probably could be.
I understand tagging as marking your environment. If you feel like you need to do that, please, go home and pee on your furniture until you get that urge out of your system. Ninjalicious called it "weird evolutionary misfire" and I agree. As for expression, feel free to do it so that it does not damage things that are not yours to deface. That is, crap your pants if you feel like it but don't smear the shit everywhere. Graffiti in places where it is allowed is okay. We have those in my city.

Basically, if the structure serves no cosmetic purpose, I consider it fair game. So the walls under a bridge (as long as it's not an overpass), retaining walls, anything abandoned that even we would consider an eyesore, etc. If it's an active location, something privately owned, or a prominent place that's seen constantly during the day, I don't care how much talent was involved; that's still just vandalism. Tagging is kind of neat in a sense, too, actually. It's ugly and annoying, but it's interesting when you get to know people's tag names and start to notice them more and more. It's kind of fun to see where these people have been, even if you wish they never were there to begin with.

I'm way over 30 and I have a good job and I disagree that it looks like shit. I don't disagree that it's vandalism.

For me, street art is okay, even if it's done without the owner's permission because the artist is not claiming "their turf", he/she is telling a story with paint. Graffiti: GRAFFITI IS CRAP. It makes buildings and locations look like urban war zones.

Posted by Steed The difference between street art and tagging is similar in scope with the difference between ue shots taken with a tripod and taken without. |
Bah! What can a tripod do for me that flash can't?

Flash photography is to tripod photography as tagging is to street art.

Flash photography is great. I take flash photographs through windows. I take flash photographs of landscape. I take flash photographs of motherfuckin' sunsets. Long live flash!

People are always going to do what people are going to do, the hardest thing to control is humans... whether its a pristine abandoned location, or commissioned street art, Someone out there is already planning a way to tag over it.... this tagging discussion has been around since the day UER opened its doors, and some 12 odd years later its still the same.
Its a hard pill to swallow, but enjoy the pretty and pristine things while your eyes are looking at it, because there will never be a guarantee that it will be there when you come back.. It's really just a lesson in life, to live in the moment and let your camera capture that moment to have forever

Location location location...If its a abandoned warehouse, mill, tunnel, cave, drain, bridge then to b honest I enjoy both tags and street art.... If its done with talent. If its scribbles and random writing that looks like my 6 yr old nephew did it then its disgusting. If its in a old schoolhouse then its also disgusting.
