Eastview Lodge is gone
entry by sentry

This article used to be part of a series of blog entries on my old website

As I am writing this post, the Eastview Lodge care home in Neepawa (Manitoba) is slowly being ''deconstructed.'' The brick building on the hill will soon be just a memory -and another vacant lot- for the citizens of this small prairie town. Now that this building is no longer in peril of being tagged, burned to the ground, or stripped bare by scrappers, I can safely assume that the disclosure of its location will not threaten its existence.

I just found out about the demolition a few days ago while searching the internet for...well, updates on the impending tearing-down of the Eastview Lodge! I knew it was coming. It was written in the stars...as well as in many newspaper articles. Sokolovic and I have been closely following the heated discussions surrounding the fate of the former care home so it came as no surprise for us to hear the news.

We are glad we had the opportunity to explore the building last fall before it was too late. Again, we cannot stress enough on the importance of having a strong sense of urgency when it comes to urban exploration... because one day it's there and then it's gone. It's as simple as that.

Although the Eastview Lodge was lacking the character and architectural features of an older building, it was still worth the money we spent on gas. Getting inside proved to be more difficult that we had anticipated due to the fact that there were houses on the north and west sides. Guess where our only access point happened to be?

In terms of aesthetics, the highlight of our exploration would probably be the beautiful solarium added to the building in the 90s. Also, the available light provided by the countless unboarded windows allowed us to fully document the interior without having to expose for too long a period. The absence of vandalism made us feel like we were the first human beings to wander the hallways since the last residents left in 2009...

I guess the most disturbing thing we saw in there were the tens of thousands of dead flies that we found on the upper floors. It was rather disgusting to put it mildly. But contrary to the opinion of the experts, there was no apparent damage or other indication that the building ''had deteriorated to a state of disrepair (sic).'' The demolition of the Eastview Lodge was nothing more than another bad political decision.
