Me and some friends took an 8 track player from a factory that was scheduled for demolition so we could smash it later. But if I'm not absolutely certain that a place is going to be destroyed imminently, then yeah, take only pictures, leave only footprints.

See.. why did you do that. If you are gonna take something just to destroy it later then you are stupid. All of the stuff Me and the others at the Historical Society take go straight into the museum with permission from the state [Who controls the property I referenced]. Just plain stupid. I remember Tom, the guy who runs the historical society I help. Anyways he used to be the DEC Liason for the site we focus on now, but he wanted to get out an old coke machine and this was back in 2002ish. This coke machine was newer but still cool. These kids came into the mill and smashed it because "The place was being torn down". Funny story the plains to tear down the site failed expect for the melt shop and continuous caster. But still, that coke machine sits with old cans of coke still in it. Smashed to pieces, I didn't think I'd ever find it, but I did and ya smashed beyond repair. Fucking shame what disrespectful brats do, they make Urban explorers my age look like shitheads..

I'll be fuckin' around in the mills

I would never take an artifact from an abandoned building, no trespassing signs on the other hand.... well I have quite the collection. No sign no crime after all right?

I sometimes take a very small thing from some places i visit. For instance, I took a small rusty spring from the brickyard I recently visited. It was in a pile of other rubbish. I try my hardest to follow the “leave nothing but footprints, take nothing but photos” ideology but it’s really hard when it comes certain items. Books, magazines, catalogs, pretty much anything you read. I hate to see a ruined reading material. Books especially. If it’s ruined then I leave it where it lies. But sometimes it feels awful to just leave one behind to rot that could have been enjoyed by someone.

I posted this before, but it seems relevant here. This guy took everything he needed from abandoned buildings to build a 50-room structure in his parents' backyard ... crazy amount of stuff ... check out the video link.

MOLE MAN

"MOLE MAN follows RON, a 66-year-old autistic man who has spent the last five decades building a 50-room structure in his parents' backyard. Using no nails or mortar, Ron instead creates perfectly balanced structures from scavenged materials he finds in the woods outside his Western Pennsylvania home. When Ron's father passes away, leaving him living alone with his 90-year-old mother, Ron's siblings are left to figure out what's best for Ron - who has never been officially diagnosed with autism - when his mother can no longer care for him. In an effort to find the money to keep Ron in his home, his friends team up in search of a mythical mansion Ron insists lays abandoned in the forest. But will they be able to find it? And, more importantly, does it even exist? This is the story of an extraordinary life, a family, and the beauty of thinking differently."

In Korea, most of the abandonments are in neighborhoods about to be demolished. They had been cleared out for months before they are torn down. It's amazing how much people just say, "Fuck it, I am going to let the demo crew deal with it." When I find something that catches my attention, like family photographs, I will usually take one. I also like finding undeveloped rolls of film, sometimes I will take them and get them processed. It would be fun to make a book of urbex artifacts.

Yes. Vintage, antique or interesting light bulbs. If I can get to them before the retards with rocks do. It's rather rare that I find any worth taking though. Most are just your run of the mill modern trash or have already been vandalized. But occasionally a gem pops up.

They're so fragile and and almost guaranteed gone once a teenager sees em so might as well preserve that particular subset of history.

below are various mercury vapor lamps, including a self ballasted sun tanning lamp. and some incandescent lamps. Also found a power groove tube. very rare.

I found the power groove tube in the rafters of a gas station that was about to be demoed. I actually found six of them. two eight footers and four six footers. very bright beastly tubes from the 50's and 60's.

Other than that. No not really.

I've never understood mindless destruction. Some graffiti looks nice. But blasting windows with rocks and burning buildings down is just flat stupid.

I had a friend I was exploring with who wanted to collect a very cool painting we found at an abandoned High School.
Suffice to say, I was able to stop him. It looks like a hidden gem to find among the dirt and muck.

I would hate to have another explorer miss out on seeing that such a cool find.

Ah hah! A bulb snatcher.

If you ever find yourself around derelict railroad stuff. The incandescent bulbs on railroad equipment are 74v bulbs. That includes the locomotive headlight.

Also of note, aircraft are typically 28v.

If you ever find yourself in NYC, these subway work lights are 600v. The alligator clips are to connect to the 3rd rail (hot) and the running rail (neutral).

I try not to take anything. I'm usually interested into old vhs and tapes but I'm not able to play it anymore so everytime I let them behind.

Wow! That's a pretty neat bit of history right there. Looks like they wired the five 120 volt bulbs in series. Those sockets are brass it looks like? That thing must be ancient. Nice find! I've always wanted to explore the NYC subways but I haven't been to New York yet, I hear some of the subway lines still use those huge alien looking mercury arc rectifier tubes that glow that cool bluish glow. Those would be awesome to get pictures of.

Looks like. 20% of the reliability, with all of the hazards of 600V!

Ignitron tubes are pretty much a thing of the past. I don't think they ever saw much use in the subway. The subway system is mostly rotary converters.

That's about right, although they've converted most of them to LED, but still 600v.

Usually i try to find papers with the name of the place on it.

The most relatable to the place the better, like old blueprints or pictures.

Most of time that ive seen, those thing have been damaged by water and humidity to the point of no return and are most of the time tucked in a corner or in a drawer so not really removing anything on the photography standpoint for the others after me.

I'm in the process of scanning them and maybe post them for people to see.

I like to find clothing with the name on it too but that is more rare.

I have a lab coat, old powerplant shirts, prison guard clothes etc.

Ive found 110 years old blueprint that were the last remaning example of that place. I offered to show them to the owner.

They were in a bunch under an old shelf. It was totally incredible to find them because this place have been trashed, looted and vandalized to the bone for 30 years and the building is open to elements since the same amount of time!

Ive been displaying them at the annual UE event im organising each year.

Il y a toujours un moyen.
