Ok looks like ( knock on wood ) this new job is gonna pan out ok. So in the next 6-8 months I'm gonna start looking at some Outbacks. Here is the deal, I don't know tons about em. I like the first gen and it's the only one I've driven some. I know I want a manual. I know I want a wagon. But I don't know what options to look for or what trouble spots are common. Hell don't even know what generation to concentrate on. Drove a 2014 and it felt kinda bland. So don't think I want a new one. One of the favorite ones I drive was a LL Bean package one with a manual. Loved it. But not sure what that package means other than leather and a badge. So Subi guys, what should I hunt for my next DD?

Hey! Ok so I just bought a 5 speed 98 legacy 2.5 gt wagon last week! Ok so things to look for : if it hasn't had the headgaskets replaced expect to replace them, timing belts , oil leaks , clicking front axles, rotted out fuel filler necks. (turns out mine has all of the above) . Subarus are great cars all in all! So practical.

If memory serves me right Bandi had one like 3-4 years ago

Dont get swindled, make sure the sellers include the OEM Golden Retriever and Kayak in the deal...

LOL- if there's no golden retriever included, make sure the car has the dog barrier delete option. I love Subarus. Aside from the head gasket issues, they are a pretty much bulletproof car, and they're so simple to work on (manual transmission with a dipstick? Heck yeah!). I've had a 2000 Impreza 2.5RS and a '96 Impreza Outback wagon. That wagon had around 400,000 miles on it when I sold it and it was still working great.

even i am a big fan of Subarus... The only bitch about them here is the damn corrosion. My favorites, aside from the Impreza, was always the DL/Loyale. What could you do to this car to stop it other than set fire to it? My friend Matt blew a home in the block when a rod let go (apparently he didn't realize that internal combustion engines require motor oil as a lubricant). So he reaches through the hole, unbolts what's left of the connecting rod, welds a plate over the exit hole and drives the car for another week. Yeah, on three cylinders... If I hadn't seen him do it, i would've called bullshit too. i've seen a DL go into a ravine on its roof, get yanked out by its rear axle on it's roof, six drunk hillbillies roll it back over on its wheels and drive it 25 miles home. if volvos are tanks, then the Subaru is a goddamn armored personnel carrier.

I got lucky this legacy I bought has not one damn rust spot on it.

The guy who I bought my 65 rambler from has a 80s justy he uses to "pack down the snow" in his driveway since its way to rusty for the road.

i knew a guy back in the late 90's that had a Justy that he beat mercilessly. It was jumped, run thru fourwheeler trails in the woods, rockcrawls... couldn't kill it.
