Mid life Career change

Haven`t been on much lately but I have been busy starting a new career. Working now as a Fire alarm tech and it won`t be much more longer before I become a senior tech.

I`m at my mid 40s and this has been a challenging time. When I first said I was going to do this, while several of my family and friends encouraged me, a number of folks warned me that I was too old to do this. Among some of the naysayers was my former boss who was screwing me around and then to discourage me from finding another job, told me that I was too old to be hired by anyone else. He fired me last year when I blew up at him after two cheques in a row bounced. They were only two of many others. For the longest time, I was not able to find another job. Had a few interviews but again, nothing and the doubt started creeping in that maybe I had made a mistake and should have stuck with a job I hated. We had to sell our house or the bank would have taken it and at this time, our finances are still pretty much screwed up and we are living with family until we can get back on our own two feet. The loss of our independence really hurt and for the longest time, I felt worthless. The asshole that I worked for finally coughed up what he owed me but by then, the damage was done. For a while, I was cursing out my former boss and myself. My former boss for what he had done and myself for being an idiot and not playing it safe. I was about to give up completely and go back to the last company I worked security for and beg for my old job back. My wife talked me out of it and encouraged (more like threatened to kick my ass) me to continue job hunting.

Finally, toward the end of September, I had two job offers with two separate alarm companies. Took the better offer and my career plans are back on track.

Now, almost six months later, it`s looking much better. Pay day is `pay` day and not `pray` day as in `I pray that the cheque doesn`t bounce.` Also, I have a boss who is treating me very well and I am getting much better training. Also, the boss has asked me if I would be interested in starting an apprenticeship for electrician after I get my senior ticket and I told him I want to do it. Looks like I`m going to be busy for quite a while.

This has been a real boost to my confidence and I really enjoy my job. Heck, today I was riding the top of the elevator (had to test a heat detector at the top of the shaft) and even though this was not my first time, I enjoyed it. Also, I get to check out a lot of buildings but unfortunately, I have to leave my camera behind.

Glad I did it but it was one hell of a scary experience.

Gone for a while. Be back when I'm back.

Congrats. It's a scary decision to make at that age - I glad it worked out.

congrats and good luck to you. the economy here hit a lot of people very hard, from the bankers on down- so I know what you are going thru as my last 17 years were working on hi-end toys.

When I say I'm 'clean and sober', it means I've showered and I'm headed to the liquor store.
