Ken, what was your experience with this article? Did it turn out the way you wanted it?

Although i feel as if any urbex publicity is bad publicity, Ken is a good dude and a great photographer.

+1 to this. Whole comment including the publicity. Ken's a great guy to explore and shoot with.

I agree. Normally this is an issue we can't hear both sides on. I know Ken is here often and I'm sure he would be willing to give his point of view on it. If it's going to be publicity, I'd rather it be from someone like Ken with great shots than some moron like me posting the "not half bad" shots. Or SDR69's "epic dick graf". That's just bad publicity all around.

He's an articulate guy, so having someone like him be interviewed for Urban Exploration was a good call on the reporters side at least. A bit too many name drops, but they seemed to have kept some of the locations secret which is a nice plus.

I didn't really look through the photos, but i know Schlitz Brewery and Brown County Mental Hospital are demolished. I imagine a few of the other spots are (or repurposed), as well. Also looks like they did keep names of some of the active locations out of the article.

What you read in the article is almost verbatim what I wrote in the email correspondence over the weeklong period that Jareem Imam and Daphne Sashin from CNN interviewed me. Non-direct quotes have been truncated for conciseness and clarity, but closely mirrors my actual written words. Understandably some things they asked about did not make the final cut; my gear, run-ins with drug addicts, how to explore with others, and Doors Open Milwaukee. I am aware that some involved with UE view any media coverage to be an outright negative. When answering the questions I was very careful about typing my responses. Daphne wanted me to reveal the exact locations for all the photos. Schlitz and the Green Bay hospital were already demolished by that point. She pushed repeatedly for me to reveal the remaining location specifics, but I declined. All of those photos have been posted at some point on the UER website. In the interest of bringing balance the authors interviewed Professor James Scarlett, who broadly categorized urbexers as people who "break" into locations. This view is consistent with what the general public already thinks of urban explorers. In the context of the article it is a stereotype that I feel gets overshadowed by the quality of the end products the other two urbexers presented. (Seriously, I'm impressed by THEIR work.) It was a risk to talk to the media, but I feel fairly good about how it turned out. I just want to be clear that I speak only for myself in this matter. I recognize that others may feel different about this.

We all contribute based on our skill level, or in my case the complete lack thereof ;)

I'm oblivious as to what an "epic dick graf" is exactly. Is this some obscure photographic talent or skill?

Great! Just what we need! More attention.

Thanks for chiming in, Ken. I think you handled it well. I can see the all-too-repeated idea that publicity is bad for a hobby that requires secrecy. However, if the press is likely to report on the hobby anyway, and always in a bad light, then I think you should be commended for attempting to at least present another view of the hobbyists. You didn't reveal current locations, you offered a sane commentary, and your shots are great. While there's still a chance the reporter can bastardize your quotes, I think this kind of conscious speaking of UE could perhaps be a good thing. It's a very fragile topic, which is why members get really anxious when it's out there. I could imagine it going very differently if you had not handled yourself so well. Kudos.

I agree. There is already way too much attention on UER, 28 Days Later, YouTube, FacialBook, etc... If we do 500 media interviews it may cause as much shit as the aforementioned.
