I know that this has been shot to death, and is basically a rite of passage for a lot of people who are local to it. But I figured I would share my trip from a few months ago to this gem of a youth detention school. I haven't had time to go through all the shots, but these are the ones that have made it to Flickr so far. I'm sure more will be added to the gallery down the road.

Neat historical facts:
The school had a unique structure, as it was designed to truly educate and rehabilitate troubled youths. Each "cottage" housed roughly 30 children, a house mother, and a house father. The father was there to over see recreational activities, discipline, and counsel the boys. While the mother was there to clean and cook for the "house". It was designed to mimic a "healthy" family structure. Each student was expected to learn a trade while there, and the day was split evenly between learning a trade and school. Of course this scenario had the huge potential for neglect and abuse. Former inmates went on to become activists and found anti-prison rape and homosexual prison support groups/foundations. It was also created thanks to the funding, support, and leadership of women's clubs and foundations. And four women were given positions on the schools board.

Thanks so much, and you might have been more familiar with it if I hadn't focused on the windows and light haha. It's a fun little location.

Well next time just ask ;) And I was actually tip toeing in your state, but in cowboy boots it sounds like stomping haha. I just hit this one spot as I was coming home from family stuff, a more proper Western NC trip is in order though. Just a matter of time!

I went there last Friday. I noticed that the sinks, tubs, and door knobs have now been removed from Cannon Hall.
