| Earlier in the week, when I found out I had 3.5 days off, I decided to go on a little road trip. I was planning on going to Lincoln National Forest in southern NM, but my boss mentioned an old ghosttown called Elizabethtown in the north. After finding Elizabethtown on the map and realizing it was a better spot (i.e. more mountainous and close to Wheeler Peak; the highest peak in NM) I decided to go there. After getting off at 1 pm on Wednesday, I met up with Kilo for lunch and to run some errands. Around 3 pm I was headed west for NM. At about dusk, I got to Elizabethtown. What a bust. It was one "building," fenced off with only 3 walls remaining. I'm glad this wasn't why I came out here. (I did find a few places worth UEing, though I didn't do them...if anyone is ever in the Taos area and wants to explore, PM me). I found a place to camp near Cimmaron but was kinda disappointed because there was a statewide burn ban, thus I couldn't cook. I went into town to find some food and then returned and slept in the back of my truck.
I awoke the next day hungry and unsure of the time, as my car stereo's clock is off and I don't wear a watch. It's nice to be timeless for a while. Since I couldn't cook my breakfast (venison sausage link) on the fire, I thought I would improvise. I wrapped the link in foil and threw it in the engine. I then drove about an hour to Red River and then to the trailhead for Wheeler Peak. I got out and popped the hood, ready to eat. No dice. The hour under the hood wasn't long enough and I was forced to have a pisspoor breakfast of a couple swigs of soy milk and a handful of dried apricots and peanuts. This breakfast of champions was to hold me over for what was about a 9 hour hike. I threw the rest of the apricots and 2 apples into my bag for lunch and headed down the trail.

So yeah, the way up was cool, and gorgeous. Lots of pine and birch trees. Of course, living in Amarillo, I'm excited to see any trees at all. I think I overuse commas. For some strange reason, my camera said it was uber-low on batteries despite me only using it for a few minutes the day before and having charged it fully before I left.
Too be continued...tired of typing, and heading out the door.

You're right! hahahaha. I forgot about this thing. It's like live journal without the teenies.
Anyway, I climbed up to the top and sat around and enjoyed the view for a while, until afternoon thunderclouds started coming in. Being at the top of a mountain holding a tripod during a lightning storm is scary, lemme tell ya. I was bookin' it down the mountain, almost at a run at some points because there was alot of electrical activity and I was surely the most conductive object for miles. Luckily it didn't rain on me until I was only about 20 minutes from my car.
