This, that, and the other thing... entry by Jester 7/15/2004 5:40 AM
| It's always been kind of clear that even though this community is filled with explorers, we're not all alike. UEM's essay on what urban exploration is a good example of this. Not everyone likes every aspect of UE. My prefernces tend towards abandoned buildings and not so abandoned institutions, places with security, just because the challenge is an added enjoyment for me. I just can't get into draining though. Others are the exact opposite, and only explore places with no security at all. Neither is right or wrong, just different ways of enjoying our hobby. People that don't actually explore can also be a part, as armchair explorers, enjoying the exploits of others. I get lots of email from *fans* of what I do, and I appreciate hearing from people. I especially appreciate heritage buffs and others with knowledge of interesting places. When these people give me a tip about a place they've wondered about, they satisfy their own curiousity by helping me check it out, and help me by letting me know about a place I may have been unaware of. What i'm saying in this rambling way is this. It takes all kinds. If we all did things exactly the same way, this would be a far less interesting place. The blend of different types of explorers, from armchair to the most hardcore makes this community what it is. The whole is more than the sum of the parts...

Amen brutha. I used to be an armchair explorer.
Urban Exploration Montreal Why are you the way that you are? | |
I totally agree. Where would UE be with me?

The more I talk with people, the more I realize this is true. I think pretty much every single person explores for their own personal reason. And that's great! As long as people remain conscious of that, and don't force their ideas of exploring on others, we can all enjoy it. All that's really important is that everyone enjoys it.
