looking to buy a ford ranger

So far I've found this one, and have been in contact with the seller, who has moved to NYC permanently but left her truck behind for her friend to sell. do any of you guys know anything about rangers? when I go to see it this week what should I be looking for besides rust? I've been reading that the 4.0 V6 is highly recommended and it could be a worthwhile truck to have.

I'll be using it as a volunteer emergency response vehicle, something to transport tools and stage rehab supplies out of for a small town fire department

edit: and yes I realize it is only 2WD....should I only be shopping for 4WD?

Seems a little pricey still. And there's nothing wrong with 2WD. Less to go wrong with it.

yeah I'm in no rush to buy something but I'd like to have it all squared away by the end of October, the Tacoma trucks are ridiculously expensive so I figured the Ranger is a great alternative

the Mazda version is a bargain as well... keep in mind, the mazda b-series was the same thing as a ranger... (Mazda Navajo was the same as the Explorer, the Tribute the same as the Escape)

i have an 05 mazda b4000 dual sport, basically exactly the truck above. with the torsion front suspension etc. Compared to my grand prix in the city its hard on gas but on the highway quite respectable. I love the thing, tires were a bit pricey when i had to change them because of the odd width. but all in all i love it, i will add i bought mine 2 years ago with only 40 000 kms and paid about 8 000$ cad.

Yeah, you can usually find the Mazdas cheaper so that's something to look into. As far as rust, check the underside of the rear end where the leaf springs attach, those rust through bad. A coworker of mine had his come up through the bed floor.

A little bit... yes.

Why not but an older model with low mileage since it's essentially the same vehicle?

her friend is showing me the truck, which is located at her home in mountain view...

thinking i'll go look at it for the hell of it, but more than likely find a different ranger later on in the month that would be less of a hassle to purchase.

Ranger is a fairly good choice. The 3.0 engine is pretty stout. My first car was a 93 ranger i got in 2006 that was given to my dad after being essentially abandoned for a while. As such, being 16, inexperienced, and doped up on adderall for ADHD 24/7, I wrecked it about 9-10 times. Sometimes serious, sometimes not. It just kinda kept on trucking, despite all the failed burnout attempts, hill hopping, doughnuts, one laughable street race against a Camry, going possibly 18-24 months between oil changes once, and other teenage idiocracy. It was a 3.0 with a 5speed. Since wrecking it into a tree in 2006 and having it sit with only water in the rad for too long, it had a cracked engine block that would occasionally puke out all the coolant instantly and overheat. So I would just have to put some stop leak in it every month or so when it happened and carried 2 jugs of water and antifreeze behind the seats. Drove it another 45k miles like this until junking it after the ball joint snapped at 70mph (great time to lose steering control and your brakes simultaneously.) and the truck was just generally too shitty to put money in. Until then, it never really broke down on me. Would always get me where I needed to go, and I took it on several trips to indianapolis (110mi away) with no problem. Basically, for the most part, this truck survived me during possibly the dumbest period of my life in regards to treating cars like shit.

The only real bother with the ranger I had was those damn leaf spring shackles in the rear. They liked to rust through and break, and MAF sensors. Hell, even the A/C still blew cold.

my dad's 96 Exploder was like that... rusting out so bad that even the rocker cover had a hole rotted through it, but the A/C still worked, cruise still worked, touch-button 4wd still worked... but the body was rotting right off the frame. In fact, he junked it when he went to change the aformentioned spring shackles and saw the frame was so rotten, there was no point in changing them.
I think it had well over 300,000 miles on it, but it was a 4.0L V6 with the autospastic.
