"A rolling symbol of General Motors' institutional arrogance and poor decision-making."

Apparently it's still a flop.

What a truly miserable vehicle. You know what - I'd rather be seen in a juke than this.

Walter White made them marginally cooler, but I'd still rather drive Gus Fring's car.

In my opinion, Subaru knocked the Aztek off of the "world's ugliest" podium with the Tribeca.

the real tragedy of the Asstek was once you got past the hideous exterior styling, the interior was functional, nicely laid out and made for road trips. But the styling... whoever designed the exterior should've been executed along with the managers that approved it.

You know I've never really found these much uglier than anything else that rolled out from GM... Now that Nissan juke is hideous I think it takes the cake.

It really was a cool idea. Just executed really fucking badly. I always thought they should have built a Montana van with all the Aztek options (tent, cooler, rear stereo control, AWD, etc), a slight lift, a roof cage and some extra lights. I still think Montanas are shit, but it probably would have sold.

it's not that the Montana's were shit, it was GM's business model at the time... ONE platform for 20 vehicles across how many product lines? Badge engineering sucked as far back as the 80's. The foreign makes were doing it, too, but were far more clever about hiding it.

Look at the bright side... you can pick up an Aztek on the cheap side, keep it in your yard and in 10 years, it will be a quirky collectible. Seriously, did anyone in the mid 70's think an AMC Pacer was going to be collectible? or a Toyota Corolla? Ford Pinto? No.

No FWD GM minivans out this way have any rocker panels left on them, front brakes only lasted 40,000 km, the wiring was TERRIBLE (they used these awful splice connectors that allowed moisture into the harness in the passenger compartment) and well, you know how I feel about the rest.

Although I'm finding out now that rear brakes on new "Caravans" (uhhh) only last about 25,000 km. And what the hell is going on with Caravan rust?! I'm seeing 4 year old vans with no tailgate left.

the steel sucked... I think it was the same plant where the steel for the Grand Prix's and Century/Regals was sourced. The brake issue was designed... it was too small a braking system for too heavy a vehicle. Caravans are in the same boat with as well.
and the wiring harness, that was because the harness had been pirated from the W-body, fiddle-fucked with and adapted to the APV line and then adapted again to the last iteration of minivan they tried.

my parents had a 99 olds silhouette, they got it pre owned about the time I started driving. It was actually a nice van, drove well, lots of power, comfortable. nice leather seats with some good options, it also had an air compressor in the rear that came in handy quite a bit. We must have taken that to florida 3-4 times and to north Carolina several times and never left us stranded. we put a beefy class 3 hitch on it and I used to tow cars all over with a friends tow dolly (true story) pretty much used it as a truck. the only real problem it had was blown headgasket at around 110k. we sold it with close too 150k a few years ago and still was going strong.

It did not meet reserve... of $18,999.

Which is pretty low for the first ever production version of a car with basically no mileage.

I will go to bed happy tonight.

IT WAS A LOVELY DASHBOARD.

There's a Textron plant about 20 minutes from where I grew up... Port Hope, Ontario. The only car I know that they made dashboards for was the Viper, but they did about 35,899,243 other kinds of dashboards too.

I just remembered the Viper for some reason.

we did dashboards and interiors for the Corvette (and they were an arrogant bunch o mongrels), Cadillac ElDorado, Oldsmobile Intrigue, Ford Mustang, Subaru Legacy, Toyota Camry, Chevrolet Malibu/Oldsmobile Cutlass, Freightliner... there are a couple more, but it's been almost 14 years and I don't recall the others.
