Hi there 2000 Grand AM SE So my ABS light has been coming on lately and then goes out when I turn the ignition off. It seems to come on when I press the brake pedal but when it actually first comes on can be anywhere from the first time I use the brakes to 3 days later. Today I took it in to have an exhaust leak fixed. I also sprayed some rocker panel spray under the car as it's starting to rust a bit. I don't think neither of those events are related to today's issue though. On the way home from Speedy Muffler I noticed an odd issue. I would press the brakes and car would brake normally... then as my car slowed down (to about 5 feet from the cars in front of me) the brakes 'slipped'. It feels like when the ABS kicks in between braking but no ABS light came on, no traction light came on. It's like the car brakes properly, you feel the calipers engaging... and then the pedal drops down just a bit and the car continues to move forward but will stop before hitting anything. It basically feels like it would feel should the ABS engage multiple times and you feel the car moving as the rotors disengage. I would say it might be a wheel speed sensor (hubs were changed a year or two ago) but no traction light comes on. Any ideas? I found similar posts regarding this elsewhere and they said possible wheel speed sensor... which corresponds to the ABS light I'd think. Cost to replace sensors if that's the issue???

Just to add on... I got back from a short drive and the ABS is now flickering off and on every 2 seconds. Add to that an awful metallic noise from under the hood which I *believe* is the ABS kicking in. I was parked with my foot on the brake and as the ABS flashed the noise under the hood also occurred at the exact same time. The fucks going on??

Normal abs operations of that era gm.

Most likely a sensor... But cheap fix :Remove your abs fuse, It disables the system so you just use your actual traditional hydraulic brake system. Yes your abs light will remain on and there will be no actual abs operation but having your abs come on when it's not supposed too is both annoying and dangerous.

And I do believe that has the Abs sensor in the wheel hub assembly. So it's not as simple as replacing a sensor if the front is the problem

my Beretta was doing that before I sold it... with mine it was because the wheel bearings were fucked.

I just replaced the bearings about 2 years back.... don't want to do that again as it's costly. There's no replacable sensor on the inner wheel well??? Shit.

From the licensed technician: Take it to a ma and pa shop, get it scanned. With an ABS system, you're gonna get a pretty obvious fault 99% of the time.
