Car for an electrical apprentice.
< on 3/2/2013 9:08 PM >

well - not quite yet.

If life goes to plan (it better) I'll be an electrical apprentice in 2-3 years. So naturally i'd like a car/truck/van. I won't be in the market to buy one for about a year to a year and a half. Right now i'm just trying to see what's out there and what kind of money i'm gong to need. i've been considering getting something like a TDI jetta wagon, but on the flip side i wonder if i'd be better off getting a truck?

I'm a VW lover, but i understand the in some ways massive advantages to getting something north american. Part availability is a must for me, along with the car being reliable, also as always money is a key factor less than 5000$-6000$ is crucial.

Any suggestions?

The vanagon was designed, like the bus before it to be all things to all people. It's a very capable work vehicle for sure.

Hey yeah you, fat ass. Not interested.

+1 and you can get a diesel that gets 30+mpg, a bit slow though.

The 1.6 NA diesel was more in the neighborhood of 24mpg but a 1.9 td can be had for ~2K and it will be liveable speedwise and around the 30mpg mark.

Well, parts availability is one thing. =P That and the fact that you're supposed to be a gearhead.

I'am but i'm also a lover of a good deal.

Say i found a vanagon with a manual for 3000

But i found an automatic vanagon for 2000.

If theres no real horrible issues i might be inclined for the latter.
Money is an issue on this one i don't have oodles of it.

The issue with the automatics is they're all over 25 years old now.

Hmmm.

What about something like a tdi Jett's sedan. They seem pretty cheap and my sister has the jetta wagon and it seems pretty reliable. Is there a certain yer range that's best in terms of reliability and fixability? I really wish I could find a Jetta wagon though.

The vanagon seems viable but I want to explore all options
Edit. What about an old Volvo wagon? Like an 850 wagon?
I really like there 240's but I'm not sure it's very practical for me right now, in terms of parts/ ability to find one in decent condition.

A Mk4 Jetta TDI sedan will last till a million km if it's taken care of. Stick with '99.5-'03, ALH engine code.
