I'll take off for any holiday that they will give me, but I'm always one of the first to volunteer. Last time I worked on Christmas day, we did jello shots at work. The shit you can get away with in a call center at 3 AM on Christmas morning!

PM me if you want to get join our board and get fit!

I was raised a believer, but man it ain't EZ. Anyway, still celebrate Christmas, though my children are nearly to the point of giving zero fucks about it. Too much information in the world to stick w/the myth, even a mega-successful one like Christmas. It's weird in America, there are like two Christmases, the secular one and the religious one. I don't know if the twain shall meet or if they do meet, but it seems to work for the capitalists among us.

This also raises the question of what does it mean to be Christian, since Christmas has absolutely N-O-T-H-I-N-G to do with Christianity.

I think now it means to be pro-life, pro-big business. Wait, what forum are we in? I don't want to go "politics" in the religion forum, my bad if I did. For a more religious answer, it means you post religious shit on your facebook wall. Until about 5 years ago we went to church as a family, the kids got nothing out of it and the people who ran the show, while good-intentioned, inspired me not at all. Maybe what it means to be Christian is to hold onto your faith in spite of mounting evidence to the contrary and muddle through?

this is the fundamental point that I do not understand. How can someone maintain faith in what more or less is an invisible friend when there is incontrovertible evidence that there is NO god. no heaven. no hell. How does someone hold on to faith in this day and age?

its sad bit true, a lot of people take comfort in religion. One of my dear friends had a really rough life and without religion she wouldn't have made it through. Also thanks to her faith, she was able to help her sister, mother and father back on the good aide of life. I know you think religion is evil and all who are religious are scum sucking assholes, but my friend is one of the sweetest and most amazing people out there. Not a single one of you would dislike her. Religion can help, so long as you dont take it to the extreme.

I used to work at a hotel that hosted visiting football teams. Naturally, the Clowns were playing the day after Christmas, so I had to work Christmas night because the Jets (I think) needed to watch their videos and stuff like that.

I don't "celebrate" Memorial Day but I take it off too. I could go in, but the place is closed.

This really doesn't mean anything. It is internally consistent to believe that God exists, and that there is no way that it could be proven or disproven. In fact, God may be such that there can be apparent proofs in the physical world that there is no God, and yet God exists outside of the testable realm. While I have never heard it phrased that way before, I think that is how most conscientious believers feel.

But, I do not believe that there is any such proof that god, heaven, and hell don't exist, other than the fact that it is completely silly to believe that they do. There is also no evidence that Santa doesn't exist. In fact, just yesterday Santa told me that Therrin molests 16 year old spiders, so who am I to doubt his existence?

I have been trying to get my family to celebrate the solstice instead for a few years now. Hasn't worked yet, I think mostly because its easier for most of them to get xmas off than the solstice.

that's not an exact statement... how i feel about religious people is very complicated. I feel that they are somewhat ignorant about the world and are using religion as a crutch to deal with their situations. Whether that's a good thing or a bad thing, well, to be honest, that's not really my place to say. In my experience with all things faith-based, all has not been rosy and i am bothered by religious people, including my mother who is a devout catholic. Our disagreements over faith and how it relates to her life have gotten very ugly, ugly to the point where i told her if she didn't leave me alone about it I was going to torch every fucking bible in the place.

...there is simply no good reason to believe any of the assertions of the "faithful". You cannot prove there is no heaven, however there is no evidence that points to the existence of heaven.

NO ONE KNOWS.

No one knows whether or not there's a heaven or hell. No one. Not even you. There is simply no way to tell.

This is, of course, assuming that you don't think that all Christians believe that it's somewhere up above the earth or under the earth. That notion is simply silly and outdated.

oh stop. you really think that you 'go somewhere' when you die? Yeah, you go into a big furnace or a concrete vault and that's the end of it. the only other 'going somewhere?' is when the people that find you go through your pockets for loose change.
give me a fucking break.

Yes, but you can't go around saying that "there is incontrovertible evidence that there is NO god" and expect anyone to take you seriously, since that is just as unrealistic as saying that "there is incontrovertible evidence that there IS a god."
