I think it would be cool to have a ropework meetup. Just like a normal UE meetup, with the usual exploring, drinking and partying, but with a specific focus on learning rope techniques from each other, and going to locations where we can get on rope. Who else is interested in this? I would be willing to host it in TN and we have tons of awesome locations, but we only have one location that really requires ropework, and one other that is good for playing around. And we do also have a good rig point in a tree at my parents house for practicing. OR, what other cities could we do this in? Any suggestions for cities with lots of fun rope places? Preferably east coast, but I'm obviously biased there...

I would love to do this. I'm in Indiana, but Ohio, Kentucky, or Tennessee would work.

gloryhole in TN would be fun....been wanting to get down there for while now. There's not too much out here in Ontario, but we've got a few places to practice...mostly bridges and a few cliffs. 50-200ft kinda stuff.

I'd be down for this.

This is the one location I was referring to where rope is required. My only thing about the Gloryhole is, it's a 12+ hour long trip, extremely complicated, unbelievably strenuous, exhausting and unpleasant, and honestly it's a bit of a death trap... BUT for those up to the challenge, it is an INCREDIBLE adventure. There is just nothing else like it. The other fun place to play with ropes is Government Tractors (the nuclear plant). But absolutely, if people feel that Johnson City would be the best place, I'd be willing to host it here. I just don't want to automatically jump to hosting another meetup here if people would rather go somewhere new.

While I'd love to do it, I feel like it's a bit too soon for me to return to the gloryhole. If there are others that don't feel up to the gloryhole we could split off into another group and do other locations that day.

Honestly, I'm sick of the Gloryhole right now too. Two trips a year is about all I can take! If I do this in Johnson City myself, I'll probably wait until late summer 2013, mainly just because my parents probably won't let me do this more often than about once a year, but also because I've been considering organizing a Detroit meetup in late Spring, and I don't want to over commit myself.

If we timed it right, I might even be able to make it to Detroit with ya'll.

I've been waiting for a few years to find a meetup of explorers. I have no rope experience or skill whatsoever but I'd be willing to stay at ground level and photograph all your epic ascents/descents if you add one short non-rope-access location to the event.

I would really like to go to the glory hole and government tractors / spiders since I have never seen any of it. If you think it's too cold this winter, I can go in the spring. Just keep me informed! PM's will email me directly since I don't log on here much apparently.

I was planning to hit up government spiders this spring, hopefully we can make this a group event. How is security there?

I definitely like this idea. Any location in TN sounds good to me, as I've not visited any of them. The glory hole sounds amazing, though. How deep is it?

I'd really like to get in on this. Unfortunately, I'm working on a very crazy schedule. Sometime in the next week or so I should actually be driving through TN on my way out to PA. Then sometime around Dec 16th or so I should be on my way back to CA from PA, and will be heading through there again; though at that time I'll have all the leisure time to stop and spend that I want. Not sure what your guy's timeline was on this thing.
If nothing else, I'd like to meet up with some of you (a mini meet!).
Give a person a match and they'll be warm for a minute, but light them on fire and they'll be warm for the rest of their life. =) |
