Got mine finally. It's a boring ass 2000 2.0 Jetta base model.
It was priced well and it's been REALLY well maintained. And came with four brand new Michelins, a new exhaust, new battery, new alternator, new rear brakes and it's a one owner car. So I feel it was worth $400. I don't know that (aside from aircooled bugs) I've ever driven a car with actual factory hubcaps... they've all had alloys or fancy steelies. So I'll have to do something about that.

Needed a vacuuming but otherwise good shape, no rips or tears and they had monster mats in it so the carpet has been well preserved.

Yeah, I live in Florida. My winter beater is my daily driver all year round.
PM me if you want to get join our board and get fit! |

my winter beater is still the same damn car i've had for winter since what? 2009? 1996 Chevrolet Beretta
Just the list of stuff it needs has grown... so far, I'm up to both front wheel bearings, struts, and shocks. The LOW COOLANT warning light is on all the time. No, it's not low on coolant, it just is always on. The ABS warning light is on all the time because I have the ABS leads disconnected from the actuator on the master cylinder. Why? under 40mph, when you are on the brakes, there is a clicking come from the dash and the headlights flicker in unison with the click. It's annoying. And then, finally, the BRAKE warning light is on because I have the e-brake handle pulled up one click to shut the DRL's off. Isn't winter grand?

I've ended up selling my past 2 winter beaters (A '94 Jetta and a '93 Golf) for a profit in the spring. The jacked up Subaru looking Tercel however, I did not make any money on. But I paid $300 for it and beat the living shit out of that poor car. Its engine and tranny live on in another Tercel to this day. And I think the rear axle was made into a trailer. If this Jetta treats me alright I might have a bit of fun with it in the spring, I miss having a fast little toy I can bring to the track occasionally.

$400 ?!? Damn, what a steal! 430,000km is pretty scary high, but I suppose if you're not faced with a lengthy commute it's all good. I recently switched jobs and now have a 120km roundtrip every day. Thought of buying a shitty beater for the winter, but can't deal with anything that may die in a snowstorm on the roads near Caledon. Will end up driving the regular ol` car with winters. one of the perks I was able to negotiate for my new job was a $2000 allowance to buy winter & summer tires. Just ordered some Hankook iPike W409's and plan on blowing the rest on some Nitto NT05, Falken Azenis RT615-k or Dunlop Star Spec's. I've always cheaped out and bought used tires before, usually with mixed success. Looking forward to driving on brand new winters Here she is in summer mode. winter rims are 16" mazda stockers painted Mil-Spec CARC green. The yellow headlight film was a test...Still unsure if I want to keep it for the winter.

Meh, mileage means nothing if the car has been looked after, my daily driver (which I don't drive in the winter) has 645,000 km on the clock. I'd rather own a well maintained high mileage car than a beat up low mileage car.

By the way, nice Mazda 3. It's the first one I've ever liked. I have a feeling you'll learn to love the amber headlights in the snow... I've always run them in winter rallies, they REALLY help with night visibility with white stuff on the ground.
(Not exactly winter in that pic, but hey... those lights worked well)

I have such fond memories of fearing I might legitimately freeze to death in that car at 4am... However, she was a lot of fun during the day when the sun was there to warm you up.

I'm looking to acquire actually a Dodge Mini Ram Van, aka the Caravan C/V, aka the Cargo Caravan. I might have a lead on one...
