1989 Honda Accord Build Thread
< on 7/9/2012 11:58 PM >

Alright guys, this is my first ever build thread. I've been on the internet and on car forums for over half of my life. I've had many projects, but I've never documented one. I'm looking to change that with this thread.

Over the past couple of weeks, my Jeep XJ has been giving me enough problems to consider getting rid of it. I took it off the road today because it's just not safe to drive anymore. That leaves me needing a new vehicle. Being that I'm a pack rat, and that I had at least one of these cars since I was 14, I know them pretty well and have accumulated a lot of parts, including some relatively rare parts. In this thread, I'm going to show you how clean and reliable you can make a car that has been sitting for years.

I purchased this car for $350 from a 3geez member with a dead transmission. Since I had a spare transmission on hand, I did the swap, pulled the car around the house, and let it sit for years. I've moved it around on occasion, but for the past 2 years, I couldn't get it to start.

The first thing I did was drain the fuel tank and remove it. The car was parked with a nearly full tank, but I only drained out about 3 gallons. I cleaned out the tank, reinstalled it with all new evap hoses, installed a new high flow fuel pump and promptly let the car sit for another six months.

Today I decided I was going to just get the damned thing running again so I could drive something that's fun to drive again.

I tossed a good battery in it, poured in a couple gallons of fuel, and nothing. It won't start. There is certainly fuel in the tank, but it was apparently expected to have about 2 gallons or so that's left unusable, presumably to catch crud. I'll get some more gas tomorrow and give it another shot and we'll see where we are.

Now for the pics.

Today's progress was slow. It still isn't starting. I have spark because it will start with a manifold of carb cleaner in it. It will also run for a few seconds after it fires over, albeit at a very low idle, under 500 RPM, on gas. I seem to be maintaining fuel pressure, so I don't think it's a fuel pressure issue. My next test will be to see if all of the injectors are being triggered, and then if they are, I'm replacing the injectors with a set from another car. I might end up testing all of them and putting together a set. If that doesn't solve the issue, I'm going to swap the distributor out to eliminate that. I have already tried another coil, although it was an old stock coil. I have an MSD Blaster 2 coil I plan on installing one way or the other, so I might install that as part of troubleshooting.

I didn't take any pictures today because I haven't really made any changes. I'll take some as soon as I clean it up and I'll get it on film when I get it running.

LOL. I was at a 3geez.com meet about 8 years ago with about 5 other 3rd gen Accords, and some guy asked one of us if we were with "Old Hondas Anonymous."

This car should be a ton of fun. I have quite a few performance parts going on it to make things interesting. I might break the 130 HP mark.

are you kidding? I drive FWD GM's; I am a shit magnet.
My only thing is the miles on that car... wouldn't it be better to yank the engine out and either rebuild it or replace it with a lower-mileage engine? the body seems like its in great shape for the year. Usually, the doors and trailing part of the quarter panels are so much swiss cheese by now. Correct me if I am wrong, but a Prelude Si engine should swap in. Back when I used to read Super Street, a cat had swapped in a late model Acura RSX engine into an older Accord with satisfactory results. What happened to the transmission in it. In your original post, you had said that the transmission was toast. What did you mean?

in my opinion, you have a solid chassis to start with, but to get over the initial where the fuck do I start hurdle is going to take some headscratching. What do you want this car to be? street racing god? dragstrip machine? corner carver? Cruiser? or a zippy grocery getter?

proceed...

That's funny on multiple levels!!

Honestly, that engine should still have a good amount of life left in it.

Part of my "build" ( and I didn't feel like making a new thread for this) I have one of these radios, got it for free. And it does all kinds of crazy shit. Anyone know what the fuck it is?

Right now, it's going to be a fun daily driver. The few performance parts I have will wake it up quite a bit. Once I can retire it from DD duties, it will be an autocross/road race car.

Sam, the Prelude engine is the same engine that's in there now. The only other engine that bolts in would be a B20 from an overseas 3rd gen Accord or Prelude. There's a mount kit to install a Civic/Integra/CRV B series motor, but I'm sticking with one of these engines because they have a forged crank from the factory and a cast iron block. A few people have boosted them to around 30PSI on the stock bottom end.

I do have some rust to deal with. A bad Maaco paint job masks a lot of issues. A friend of mine paints cars, so we're going to do the little bit of body work it needs and paint it later this fall.

Dave, that looks like it's a radio with a big-ass screen to me.

replacement patch panels can't be that bad to buy or install?

I have several clean shells I can cut metal out of. It's not a problem for us to fix it right. My biggest reason for wanting to paint it is to get the Maaco paint off and get some real paint on it. This thing has so much overspray on the lights and trim that I'll probably spend a solid day cleaning it off.

It's a bit of a resto-mod project. Prices for these cars have gone up considerably in the past year, so I think that they might be catching on with the JNC crowd. They've caught on with that crowd in Japan and Southeast Asia in the past 2 or so years, and the USDM guys follow a couple of years behind.

I did get it running this morning. The fuel injectors were bad. I love having plenty of spare parts.

one of the reasons that these cars are getting popular is that all the Civics, CRX's, Integras and, RSX's have been bought up or are asking ridiculous prices for them. The Accord, and to an extent, the Prelude are kind of sneaking under the radar. Personally, I always found the Accord less of a snoozer than the Camry, had more nuts than the Camry and was way sportier than the Camry. As I said, a friend of mine had an Accord with 300,000+ miles on it and he drove the shit out of that car, fearlessly. The only reason he got rid of it was the body rot was getting out of hand and the automatic transmission was starting to get... funky on the 2-3 shift.

It seems pretty common for Hondas to be trashed thanks to body rot here in the northeast especially NY. You guys throw salt down like you're the highest taxed state in the NE. Oh wait.

They usually have tons of life left in the motor and tranny, but have terminal cancer.

Second gen Preludes have already been adopted by the JNC crowd. The second gen Prelude and the third gen Accords share a lot.

Since B series engine mounts have now been put back into production, I think we'll see more of these cars running around with them. We've had several guys sign up for 3geez.com immediately showing off their freshly swapped Accords. Five years ago, we'd get kids coming to the site looking for swap parts only to find none, then they'd post their car for sale.

I've crushed one clean 87 Accord sedan shell, and I'll be crushing one more clean one and 2 rusty ones eventually. There's a slim chance that I'll build the sedan into a running car again since I have the parts, and that will give me a coupe shell for its parts.

*shrug* I have a 2001 Pontiac GrandAm I plan to run into the ground. If the engine dies before the body falls apart, I'll toss in a nicer engine to finally give my girl some pep.

Guess what I'm trying to say is I'm addicted to shit boxes also.

the thing with the Grand Am and Malibu was if you got a good one, she'd run trouble-free until the end of time. The rest of them... the N-body was a flaming pile of shit. I don't know why those cars sucked so bad, but suck they did. Although, there is a girl around the block who has an Alero with 280,000 miles on it and she's never had a problem with it.

is it just Montreal or do cars from Quebec generally get dented to shit over their lifespans?
