What happens to orphan images

I've always wondered this...

People are continuously uploading photos to the site (database and forum). This must be quite taxing on the disk space.

What happens to the orphan images though? example: When someone uploads images using the Flash tool, then abandons that post. Or if you're like me, you upload a series of photos that were not yet post-processed and have to re-upload them so you clear the text box and re-upload new images.

Is there a purge done, and if so I'm wondering how the site determines that they are not being used any more compared to stale posts?
