I totally agree with you.

I read that people are beginning to rethink the redevelopment of Fort Ord, instead of building on it, they want to turn it more of it into open space. This still means tearing down the old base, but I would rather see open space than a bunch of houses.

Also, there is a group of volunteers hoping to open a Fort Ord Museum, I hope they are successful. They are amassing an archive. "The project also seeks to preserve and restore one or more of the historic wooden military buildings (WWII era) and one or more historic masonry buildings (Korean War era) as physical artifacts of Fort Ord history."

http://foma.csumb....ord-museum-archive

Also, I really hope they do not tear down the radar tower on Mount Umunhum.

Its about time. Its been a very abused base for so long and it would be great to see some buildings restored or preserved for posterity. I also love to mountain bike/hike and it would be nice if you could hit the trails and back-country without the fear of old munitions and such. Its the only place I've ever explored in which I found a sign warning of an exclusion zone you were standing in.

I find it a bit ironic that the campus is helping in setting up the museum since they spent so much time dumping their old toxic computer parts and garbage around the various parts of the base with impunity. The stuff I've found out there... I guess they figured it couldn't make it any MORE of a superfund site, LOL.

The Umunhum location is still in the air, we'll just have to wait and see on that one.

Haven't posted since this thread almost got locked down last week. It seems the dust has settled so thought I'd put up a couple of pics from today's ride. It was a long one for me, about 25-26 miles. Rode up the coast, through CSUMB, down Watkins Gate Rd, over Hennikens, then East along Eucalyptus, and then S.West along Pilarcitos Canyon, up into laguna Seca then down S. Boundary Rd. and home. The following were taken on the North end of Pilarcitos Cyn.

The shells are from dummy rounds. This area was used for advanced infantry training where troops shot at each other in mock battles using blanks. I assume that's why there are no fences or warning signs surrounding it, just a sign at the trailhead telling you that use is restricted to signed trails..oops!
If I start seeing AK rounds on the ground I think I should be very close to where I want to be.

You are very welcome Photloose. Loving your contribution. I'm lucky enough to live very close to this place which makes it very easy to find the time to explore all the different areas there. Hope you enjoyed your visit.

Photloose, No way is your number 1 the same place as the church our group was taken to at the meetup? I'm seeing similarities in the pics but if they are the same place I'm amazed at the terrible condition its now in. Please let me be wrong.

Two different chapels. Photloose"s looks like the one on the West side, South of the one behind the swimming pool.

Sooo..I'm planning a little moonlighting in a certain area of interest to a few of you. I know some of the members here have visited this "city" before but I thought I'd throw it out there for anyone who'd like to join me. I'll be spending the night there and have a date in mind. Unfortunately there will be no full moon (39%). PM me for the date if interested.

Talisman is correct - not the same church. This one was closer to Light Fighter. The one by the pool was super boarded up.

Great photos photloose, it can be a hard place to shoot because of all the diffused light from the fog. The sewing machine is awesomely random...thats Ord for ya. I'm glad you had a good explore, I always enjoy mine here.

Talismen, have you found the machine gun nest and the buildings south of it?

There is also an old obstacle course and probably some other stuff I haven't found yet around the area.

The last three pics are old with no post process, but you get the idea.

Yes, did a little sploring in that area a while back. Couldnt figure out what that machine gun nest was at first...Also been spending a bit of time on the South side recently too. Managed to gather a bit of info on the training area and the mock Viet village that was there. Apparently there were two built out there and I think I'm close to where one of them used to be. I'm hoping it's the one with the tunnel system under it. Anyway, I think some old maps may be coming my way soon.

Just had to post a shot or two of one of four old street lamps standing in the CSUMB campus that I hadn't really noticed before. They look like they've been there a few years.

Went for another long ride today. The new housing is going up at East Garrison, which means it won't be long before they start renovating the old buildings out there. The hole in the fence has been patched, so scrambling up a steep incline is the alternate way in.

...But I did notice something hidden amongst the trees off to the side of a trail South of the E. Garrison firing ranges. At first it looked like a large retaining wall, but after I climbed up on top and walked along it I noticed a couple of doorways down below. Thought I'd found a bunker at first but it turned out to be what looked like a small room where the guys that operated the targets hung out.

Made a return trip to a little valley on the South side of Ord today to do a little more exploring. Headed down into a dry creek bed looking for the elusive mock V.C village that was built here during the Vietnam war era...

Had to be real careful not to step on any Punji sticks that might have been left lying around, lol.
