Did you feel the earth move Saturday morning? Did you notice a new moon eclipsing the sun? Did toads rain down from the sky without warning?
Well, I finally broke down and decided I should take a stab at linux. I had a dual 300 512MB with 50GB SCSI storage just sittin there and some time to kill...
I did some reading and searching and decided to go with Suse 9.0.
I did the FTP install option and after several hours of frustration (mainly because when you enter the directory pat you have to put pub/suse/i386/9.0 and NOT /pub/suse/i386/9.0 or pub/suse/i386/9.0/ - of course it doesn't tell you this and you have to dig through forums to find out what the fuck is going on - but of course it DOES do the 50MB download of the core files before it errors out. Piece of SHIT! Sorry...
Anyway - I finally got it running from a local mirror and it started installing - all night - got up in the morning expecting to play with it - but no - now it needs patches - about 3 hours worth - yeah, WAAAAAY better than windows (My hairy white ass it is). So patches are done - it's finally time to fire it up - got logged in to the desktop in 640x480 mode. Yes, so much better than windows - So I spent about 30 minutes trying to figure out how to change my resolution and said "Fuck it!" and booted a 98 floppy and fdisked away all the partitions.
So I drop my 2k3 Server disk in there and start booting - and what comes up but GRUB boot loader - hmmm - fdisk/mbr did the trick on that - finally got it going but now Win is telling me it can't install the nt boot loader for some reason.
HOW DO I GET THIS FUCKER OFF MY COMPUTER!?!@?!#@?#!!!!
For some reason it won't load the nt boot loader - it's driving me nuts. I have 2 raids installed don this box a 2GB mirror for os and a 50GB Raid5. I really don't want to break the raids, low level the drives and then rebuild the raids - what do I have to do to get linux to let go of the damn boot record?

I've formatted - mbr'd and fdisked my brains out...I had 2k3 on this server just before I installed SUSE and it worked fine - so I'm pretty confident it's something Suse did to my boot record.
I haven't tried formatting in NTFS - just FAT32 because I can't get to the stage in NT loading to have the option of configuring the drives (that's where it fails).
I guess I should whip up a ghost or drive manager cd and get it squared away - I'm just really really unhappy with my Linux experience this far. I am not impressed at all.

I'm assuming that the drive currently has nothing on it that you want? If that's the case, you can boot up on a linux disc, and guarantee that everything is gone by:
1) finding out what linux calls your drive (hda, sda, something like that)
2) at a root prompt (#), type this, and replace hda with your actual drive name: dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/hda bs=1M count=1
This will overwrite the first meg of the drive with zeros and give you a completely clean slate.

i would stick to windows, linux is quite a bit different, and almost less functional than windows...but if you want linux i would suggest mandrake linux 10.0, thats what i had and it was decent.
