AEG, AZG, AFP, WTF? I need to buy some parts for my '01 Golf 2.0, and its slightly confusing. Its like VW did different things with their vehicles depending on what mood they were in during the workday. Im buying basic stuff like radiator and small parts, but need to know the engine code. Ive figured this out once before, but i cant find the decoder or whatever i used. Help from the VW guys here? I hate these cars.

My VIN is 98WGT21J814008551, and i think my engine is AEG.

There should be a sticker on the upper timing belt cover, also check the build sticker in the spare tire well.

Your dealership might be able to decipher your VIN, too.

As mentioned before the engine code is located on the top of the timing belt cover.there is a sticker with a bar code and then the engine designation is on it.
I had an AEG in my mk4 99.5. apparently if the valve cover is black stamped steel and not aluminium its an aeg according to someone on the vortex. but you cant be safe taking their advise so check first. the avh and up have aluminium valve covers apparently

most are interchangeable. but not all. AEG is drive by cable while others are drive by wire.
Along with exhaust and other intake differences.

Good to hear you figured it out.
