Abandoned home on Pickering airport lands destroyed by fire JEFF HAYWARD/METROLAND PICKERING -- Pickering fire crews battled a "suspicious" blaze at an abandoned house on airport lands near Brougham at around 9 a.m. on Thursday. June 3, 2010 Jun 03, 2010 - 11:08 AM BROUGHAM -- A suspicious fire in an abandoned house on North Road, near Hwy. 7, destroyed the structure Thursday morning. Transport Canada, in charge of the federal airport lands, has arranged regular security patrols for the abandoned homes, and it was security personnel who discovered the blaze at about 9 a.m. "We are treating the fire as suspicious," said Pickering Platoon Chief Geoff Nicholson. He added it appeared the fire started on the porch of the building and by the time fire crews arrived the house was fully engulfed by the flames. There was no hydro to the building. Chief Nicholson said the fire did $150,000 damage. Fire prevention officers are investigating. The road was closed north of Hwy. 7 as fire crews worked to contain the blaze. This is second fire in an abandoned home in Pickering this week. On Wednesday a vacant building on Dunfair road, near Dunbarton High School, burned.
