Why Are People Who Review Cars So Ignorant Of Cars??? < on 2/25/2010 7:34 PM > | Reply with Quote
as the title implies... i was watching car reviews over on youtube and the people that review cars for Cars.com, edmunds.com and kkb.com are flaming idiots that would be better off reviewing blenders or dishwashers for all their knowledge of all things automotive.
why don't actual car guys ever get to review cars?

Posted by yokes Did they call the Cobalt a piece of shit or something?
no... it wasn't that... hahaha... no it was just this level of stupidity. If you are reviewing a car and are calling yourself an expert, shouldn't you at least know what features like no-lift shifting are? VVT? No the difference between direct injection and sequential?

After working with a team of automotive journalists during my Mitsubishi Evo and RalliArt builds, I can say most of them know NOTHING about cars. One who I do respect though, is John LeBlanc.

what set me off was a review of the 09 Cobalt SS/TC... the guy was talking about the no-lift shift feature. He looks at the camera and says "if I wanted an automatic, i'd have bougt one." there is a big difference between a no-lift shift in a manual transmission, turbocharged equipped car and an automatic transmission... it's just how fucking stupid are these people? And other people actually LISTEN to what these fucking toolboxes have to say?

I have to agree. There's only sources of automotive journalism I trust: MotorWeek (who reviews cars with a full battering ram of tests) and Jeremy Clarkson.
And Bandi, at Oregon Trail, ESPN sent two photographers to the event who normally cover...LACROSSE. And they were idiots because they drove onto a HOT stage.

when was the last time you met an actual car guy with a creative writing degree or the interpersonal skills to land a job with a publishing company or e-company? Ive only met one, and he's having a hell of a time finding a good-paying job writing print for car sites or anything else. No one in the publishing business gets into that business to write automotive articles with integrity anymore, they do it to sell papers/ad space/ad hits/get market share and most consumers of automotive journalism can't properly tell the difference anyway.
motorweek/clarkson are all well and good but what publishing company has the technical wherewithal to give them a good run? it's just easier to pump out crap that's fun to read and easy to sell. it's publishing, not wrenching. id love to see more choices worth caring about but who's going to put it into print? it's damn hard to write an article that's both technically correct and enjoyable for people to read... john Q falls asleep when an article gets too technical...
