| | | Around here there is a bank that has a program that allows you to 'round-up' every debit card purchase and put the extra into a savings account. How it works is very simple, you make a purchase for $24.60 and the bank rounds it up to a $25.00 purchase. They take the $25.00 out of your account, give $24.60 to the retailer, and put the remaining 0.40 into a savings account for you. It is still your money, you're not making anything extra, they just help you save without noticing a few pennies here and there. Sounds great.... However, if you don't have a banking package that is unlimited, there are two service fees for each debit transaction. You could be paying $1.50 for the savings of 0.40 that is already your money. People with unlimited or high volume flat rate banking packages don't mind, but several people were shocked to discover how much money they were losing with this program. As a retailer, I've also noticed that I pay a premium charge for each transaction processed on one of these cards... they are double-dipping and ripping people off.
