WTF?? I understand that banks need to be ultra-conservative these days, but what on earth is with the never ending, obnoxious amount of paperwork they require to get these things put through??
I've been supplying every piece of paperwork I have to these people for the last 6 weeks now. And after I'm done doing that, they want another batch of things, and another . . . . .
I'm on my THIRD extension and am ready to walk. 3 weeks ago they started saying "don't get discouraged, its almost done." I finally asked them if it was like this with every application. They said "This is a cake walk compared to most of the applications we do".

I think you just had a bad experience. I closed on my first house last Friday and all it took to get funding was one trip to my lender's office and about an hour worth of paperwork.

This bank comes at me with one problem, I resolve it, then they pose another problem. And its the most ridiculous shit!!
When I got married, my husband's last name was very similar to my own maiden last name. So now, they think I'm trying to "scam" something because of the "apparent misspellings" of my name. So I had to provide my birth certificate and my social security card. They weren't satisfied with that, so then I had to provide my marriage certificate. They weren't satisfied with that so I had to get a copy of my divorce decree. If they are going to require all those things; why not just say it up front. Not one item at a time.
Then they wanted proof that my ex-husband deposits $ into my account for a debt that we hold jointly. They asked for 3 months of my bank statements. Then they asked for 6 months. Then they asked for a YEAR of bank statements. Then cancelled checks. When I told them they were cash deposits (my ex always dealt with cash) they wanted a written statement from the bank manager that my ex made these cash deposits to my account every month. Short of fudging my own statement on fake letterhead (which I almost considered) there was no way the manager could attest to such a thing.
Its been SIX WEEKS and my loan is still "conditional pending further information".
I finally asked the processor if I should make an appointment for a DNA test. But then I would probably have to further "explain" my DNA results by exhuming my parents bodies and DNA testing them too.
I wonder what would happen if they found out my grandfather changed our families last name when he came over from Italy.

I would go with a different bank. That's just ridiculous. I work at a credit union, and I've never heard of such paperwork. Tell them you're walking, and I bet they'll "amend" the paperwork they want very quickly.

Credit Unions rock...most of the time. Sometimes you get a dud. But generally, they rock.

Anyone have experience with Proponent Federal? I have one nearby... And I've been thinking of going the credit union route.

Shortly after my last post on here yesterday, I made an application with another bank. I explained to them what was going on and they told me to fax all my info over to them.
By 4PM they said they had put my file together and was hoping to review it before 6.
I got a call at 9:30 this morning saying things looked good, and that I could have an answer as early as later this afternoon!
I contacted the first bank and of course was told "we are working on it, we'll let you know as soon as possible".
So, with that being said, anyone applying for a mortgage should stay away from a popular National bank starting with the letter "S" to avoid the same bullcrap they are putting me through.

Wow,what a bunch of bull. Glad you reapplied elsewhere!
I'm pissed off because there are two banks here, and neither one will give me an account without absolutely clear credit. Apparently I owe $500 to I-don't-know-who,and neither bank will even give me an account until I find out who I owe it to and pay it. They have no problem trying to charge me $20 each to cash my paycheck and a pay a bill, though.

Call the first bank and cancel your app.
You shouldn't have to fight to get a mortgage loan.
They should be doing what they can to earn your business.
My buddy just bought a huge corner lot with huge pool. 128k !
The first bank was putting him through the hell you just mentioned. 3 weeks of it. They kept wanting this that and the other thing. He got tired of it quick. Called another bank brought down the required documents, next day they called with an approval pending a good inspection of the house and his down payment.
He went down to the other bank and told them he was canceling app, they told him the same thing " but we almost have your loan done !" He showed them his approval letter and they said "oh we will beat that rate by .2% if you hold on.
He said no thanks, and have a nice day. Next day he got a call from bank #1 saying his loan was approved. He turned them down again. The loan officer went as far as showing up to his house to beg him to take their loan.

Just to follow up; the second bank I applied to gave me an approval within 48 hours!! Closing next Thursday.
I was going to cancel my other credit app; but decided that I wanted to see just how long they are going to take to make a decision. Of course, now my "loan processor" is on vacation . . . .
I"m hoping I close before the first bank makes a decision. Then I'm just going to send them a copy of the deed after I own the place! ha ha.

Right on. A bank I dealt with did the old "This loan application will take three weeks to process" crap. I didn't want to deal with them in the first place but the salesman who sold me my Jimmy was insistent. I told him, "Okay. Go ahead with these asses but if they take more than 48 hours to process the loan application, consider this sale dead! I will want my deposit back immediately as well."
I was laughing when he called me back in a panic. I let him sweat for a bit and then finally agreed to apply with the bank I wanted to deal with. Less than 24 hours later, the loan was approved and I was on my way to pick up the Jimmy. Oh and as for the other bank, the loan application was finally approved two months later. I told them to shove it!
