I was teaching my ex how to pick locks, and realized I hold my picks differently than all the instructional videos... The professionals all seem to hold the picks like a pencil, or a fork. I hold them more like I'm about to knife a hobo. To be explicit; I place my the first knuckle of my forefinger against the face of the lock (with the thumb-side edge of the fingernail touching the lock at all times), I then use the palm end of the top segment of my thumb to pinch the pick against the center portion of my middle finger, and my last two fingers hold the pick against the top of my palm... Then changing depth is a matter of straightening my forefinger, while my palm muscles adjust the angle of the pick.
