Around the Region... < on 8/18/2007 1:55 PM > | Reply with Quote
I'm consistently amazed that I always find something new in my travels around Durham Region. Some stuff is what UER mods like turbozutek describe as "unsavvy" exploring (I guess the high art of UE is on his own site?). Anyways, this is stuff I enjoy and find pleasurable. I hope you enjoy too...
First, a drive down charmingly named Forestream Trail (is this the old routing of Whites Road beyond the blockade?). But THE MAN was telling me I couldn't go where I wanted to go!!!
Then a few north Pickering gems, totally untouched by asshats...
Barely noticeable off the side of Conlin Road near Simcoe Street is the former bridge over Oshawa Creek. It was the former routing of Conlin and the bridge is a ultra narrow one-laner...
Finally, I wanted to drive down the new Grandview Drive North extension. But THE MAN wouldn't let me!

Looking at the old Conlin bridge from above on Google earth it seems the road was only slightly diverted from its original course Maybe just to straighten the road or save the cost in tearing down the old bridge when they added the new one Thanks to budgetary concerns we are left with these little gems to investigate and wonder about.
Keep on keeping on Fedge. I appreciate your posts

Posted by Ares Loving that first house.
Me too. I initially didn't think these places were abandoned but upon closer inspection I saw the airport signage. I think the municipality mows the lawns to keep appearances up to deter asshats.

In case anyone is interested in such things (I am, a minority of one), here is a little more of the roadway now known as Forestream Trail. Back in the day, it was the main routing of Whites Road.
The red dotted line indicates the former Whites Road routing that is still available to the public. The green line is the former routing that is closed off to the public. I also indicated where active houses are located. Where the closed off section joins Taunton Road, it is also closed off. At that intersection, Sideline 26 is still signed showing Taunton Road as named Concession 4, amazed this hasn't been changed yet. The gold/yellow line indicates my guess at the former Taunton Road alignment.
Below, shots of the closed off section including a view from under the bridge that carries Taunton Road over the creek.

I saw that Conlin Road bridge ages ago and still wonder about it. I've wandered all through the woods around it in hopes of finding more remnants of a forgotten roadway. No such luck.
There used to be a small public school nearby (where the sewage treatment station now stands), so it's possible that it may have been an access route the school - or maybe was destroyed to make way for the school. Who knows?
I enjoy this stuff a lot.

Haha, I really want to go to that first house. I'm starting to develop a real appreciation for abandoned houses. (Mostly because they're pretty much all that's around my house ... Ahahahh.) Maybe I should try it sometime. =P
