As all you Durham-ites know, RE sites are a bit more difficult to find because of that accursed nature that you see everywhere.

What I'd like to do is start a thread where everyone can post their best tips on exploring rural sites. I don't mean directions, just things you look for (or avoid!) when you are seeking sites in Durham region (or any rural site for that matter). Do you take specific routes? Are there road-side indicators that usually work? Do you do research before/after heading out? If so, how/what/where and what tips do you have on that? Have you found patterns during your explorations (eg. abandoned houses always appear on the edges of suburbs, etc.)?

Also, what type of equipment have you found indispensable during REs? I'm not talking about the standard maglite but stuff that's specifically suited for exploring country areas? What about seasonal preparation?

Finally, do you have any personal philosophies regarding RE that you would like to pass along? Special exercises or training that make exploring easier?

I don't expect anyone to give up any secrets, just things you think are useful and wouldn't mind parting with.

Okay...why don't I go first then, shall I?

Old, rusty mailboxes. Not always a 100% match for abandoned places, but if you see them, slow down and take a closer look. Often a crumbling mailbox is a gateway to exploration!
