Cullen Gardens and Miniature Village < on 12/4/2005 12:27 AM > | Reply with Quote
I just heard tonight that Cullen Gardens is closing permanently as of January 2006 after 25 years of business. To put it bluntly, that really sucks! At this point in time, no word is being mentioned to the future use of the property but knowing the current assholes in tWhitby Shitty Council, it sounds like there's gonna be another sardine subdivision. There are a number of very old buildings that were moved there. I wonder what's going to happen to them?

When did I go to Cullen Gardens??
It's amazing how much they can take from Whitby at a time. Everything is shutting down or being torn down. It is sad that they are tearing down Cullen Gardens. Even though I haven't been there since I was like 12 yrs old might of been younger.

Wow, this really sucks. I've been there for Halloween, Christmas, New Years, St. Patrick's day, and during the summer. My family used to have a season pass for this place. It kills me that so much Durham history is being destroyed. I suggest that for anyone who hasn't visited Cullen Gardens to check it out before it's gone.

The closure isn't something that Whitby is doing, it's something that the public is forcing Cullen to do. Just not too many people are going there anymore and, after all, Cullen is a for-profit business.

I think i went there twice but i was very young. They had the train set that went around the small village. Was never a big fan of that place but it sucks that it is going to be gone.

Sue Cullen, daughter of Len Cullen (founder) creatively stopped advertising, hence sales of tickets went down. She wants the big mula...real estate sales. I used to work for years there, and a good friend still does/did...sadly Len is getting too old, and his daughter (who was handed the business despite the fact she has poor people/management skills) has other dreams besides those gardens. Len has watched his entire business empire been squandered and sold off after his lifetime of hard work. I cant stand to see spoiled kids inherit fortunes and blow them off. The Cullen empire holds numerous historical buildings which were granted as part of a preservation/historical effort. If the property goes up for sale, these better be given back to the town else Ill be truly sickened. And the whole gardens is on what was a small town from way back when called "Baggersville." Part of the creek grounds and the road side grounds was given to the town generously by Len way back when...interesting to see what happens to that. I recommend buying Len Cullens book (sorry I forget the name offhand), but it is very interesting, and combined with some of author Brian Winters books on Whitby, everybody can see the invested history of the property.

Amen to that IndianaTeach. And if it turns out that those historical buildings get demolished to make way for sardine subdivisions, that would really sicken me.

Correct me if I'm wrong but I've seen a fella on TV from time to time who does outdoor/gardening segments on various TV shows like CityLine...Mark Cullen is his name I think...I thought he owned the place. He's kinda tall and looks to be in his 40's or 50's.

He is the son of Len Cullen who started Cullen Gardens. My understanding (and someone please correct me if I'm wrong) is that he got into his own business (TV shows) while his sister got control of Cullen Gardens.
A buddy of mine worked for Cullen Nurseries years ago and he got to know the family. He actually enjoyed working with them and really liked both Len and Mark Cullen. Apparently they were very easy to work for and really enjoyed landscaping.

Thanks Rainman. I looked his name up after I posed my question. I didn't come up with as much info as you but I figured out that he was indeed part of the family and not a figment of my imagination.

Wow, I have lost touch with my UE'ing side... Had no idea that this was closing. It's definitely been a long while since I've been there.

Indeed. It's been awhile since I've seen you around.
