the ones out over the shops (far south-east, by frederick & concord) ARE that terrible... steel and tar don't deal with 50 years of abuse all that well. what's scary is parts like this:

| | | Packard sure is a great place. Judging from your photos, I guess you've seen a few rooms that I haven't found yet . That's one of the best parts about Packard; you can keep going, and going, and going back, and there's always something you haven't seen yet if you poke around enough. And the offices -- so swanky! (At least, the bits that haven't been completely trashed are quite swank.) There are a couple of old server rooms in the office area, complete with remnants of raised floors and massive air conditioning machines. It's a shame none of the actual IT equipment is left; I'd get a kick out of seeing what kind of 50s-60s-70s-or-80s-era equipment was last used there. Also near (but not in) the offices is one remaining frame of a (very) old telephone switch. In addition to the regular station and trunk circuits, I noticed that some of its panels were labelled "AUTOVON" circuits; AUTOVON being the US military phone system used from 1963 through the mid 1980s. The switch frame in the Packard plant looks exactly like the one Panic! found in a Titan I nuclear missile silo in Colorado:
Obviously, Packard Motors didn't use AUTOVON, since they went out of business in the 1950s, and AUTOVON didn't exist until 1963. Paraphernalia that I've found in the Packard office area suggests that the offices were used by DCAS, the "Defense Contract Administration Service," for some period of time after Packard closed, but I have been unable to narrow the date range much further than that. Regardless, they do seem like the kind of outfit that might use AUTOVON, as they would presumably need to communicate with various military bases. I'd sure like to know which type of telephone switch this frame belongs to, but I'm afraid I'm not familiar enough with historic switching equipment to be able to tell. -DrDeke
If you don't want it known, don't say it on a phone. |

| | | Drop me a line if you're ever in need of someone to head out that way with. I love the place. As for the boarding up, I was actually out there the day before yesterday showing Packard to a friend from out of town and saw the new boards. I guess they must have only done it to appease the folks in that one neighborhood along the (east?) side of the plant, since they didn't bother to board up any other sections. Kind of strange... Also, I wonder who actually did the boarding: The City of Detroit, or the private party that claims an ownership interest in the property? -DrDeke

| | | It's amazing how long these places can remain abandoned - but not for this particular town, apparently. I was there in January, and I loved every minute of it!
