It's about time the LA drains were tackled. They're just begging to be explored. Me? Naw. I'm too afraid of CHUD.

THE CHUD!!!!!!!!
Are you kidding? Your guy's got a camera. Mine's got a flamethrower.

Went down again yesterday. We found a large drain. We walked it for a 1/4 mile only to find water too deep to walk in.... oh well.

(This is NOT a picture of how deep the water was, just the drain)

hahaha "Raft Draining" that has bad ideas written all over it. This drain wasn't THAT deep. Just deep enough to fill my boots with sewage!

Doesnt have to be that deep, just deep enough to float a raft. Go to some of the eastern boards such as Great Lakes area hehehehe

Would anyone be interested in trying to find a new opening to the Fullerton tunnels?

What's wrong with it?

Just cuz loads of other people. (girls, too!) will do something you find to be questionable doesn't instantly make it a bad idea. Just means you're not up to the challenge.

I think AAS's dog does drainboating too.

A few more from the tunnels.

1. A lot more graffiti at the entrances off the river

2. We were not deterred

3. Thank you, whoever left a ladder here

4. Paging Mulder and Scully

5. Mended wall

So I went out again today.

Here's a picture of the drain I went in last time from the outside

(It gets round a quarter mile in)

Next I came up on this little area

That small hill on the left was so slippery it took me around 30 minutes to get up it. I kept sliding down, soaking myself in river water (YUM!)

Unfortunately about 100 feet in the tunnels go down to about 3 feet

I got really excited when I came up to this. I thought "Yes! A second, chill entrance!

Only to find out that's a police station in the background. I quickly ran!

Here's the only other drain I found. About three feet tall.

Nothing special yet. I'm gonna keep at it though!

Random tip:

From my own experiences, I've found it's often easier to explore smaller-diameter drains using a skateboard.

Lay down on the skateboard and figure out a rhythm by pulling yourself along with your hands and pushing with your feet. If you're using nice fat wheels you can usually keep yourself out of the muck too, but my knees tend to get wet still cuz I'm so tall.

Your neck will also get kinda tired after a bit.

I just thought of something though. I wonder if you could get a decently powerful RC car, and hold it in one hand, pressing it against the pipe floor or wall to pull you along on the skateboard. May drain batteries quickly...dunno.

Good luck! Nice seeing your pics.

Or buy four wheelbarrow wheels, two threaded rods, locknuts, and a piece of plywood with U-bolts for the rods, and build yourself a drainboard. So much easier to roll thru and still lightweight. Used this same design for my railcar (completed this summer with tests along the Ord BLM rails).

That is also an option, though I was going for "cheap, easy & lightweight"

Your mileage may vary.

RG: when are you gonna post up pics and video of your railcar?

*sigh* Failed at buying a motor last summer. Have a 2HP, but unless I can get the gearing right, it's not gonna work. Everything else (frame, wheels, seats, etc) is ready to go; just the motor that's lacking.

Well, that and the rain.

...

Anyone wanna trade a 2H for a 5HP Briggs/Stratton?

(edit: also fail at spelling...)

It's more than a little buggy, but you can find maps here:
