Explorations in and around Athens, Georgia
< on 11/29/2011 1:06 AM >

I joined this site well over a year ago with the sole intention of contributing locations to the Georgia UE listing, specifically Athens (how does this town not have a UE group!? There's so much to see!). Well, now that I've gone away and joined a UE crew in Memphis, TN, I'm finally getting around to posting all the locations I used to frequent back in Athens. So go and explore them right now, while they're still there. Seriously, go now.

Hit me up with a PM if you want to know details on any of these places.

These photos reflect the condition of the buildings as of December 2010. It's in the process of being demolished, so there's no telling what the place looks like now. Buildings on the site were constructed between 1922 and 1953.

Abandoned Central of Georgia Railroad Spur - Athens, GA
<Reply # 2 on 11/29/2011 1:29 AM >
Posted on Forum: UER Forum

The former Central of Georgia rail spur runs through Bishop, GA, about twenty minutes south of Athens. The line has been abandoned since 1987 and includes several river crossings.

The pictures showing a photograph require some explanation:

Halfway across the bridge, I noticed a piece of paper wedged under a ladder support (fortunately or unfortunately at the time, I didn't realize there was a ladder there, or I would've climbed it). The piece of paper turned out to be a photo of a group of guys who, as some point in time, decided it would be a good idea to drive a pickup truck out onto the middle of the bridge. The date stamp on the back read "2001" but the quality of the photo and the model of the truck looked more like something from the late 80s, which was when the line went out of commission. Either way, that's where I draw the line on crazy. Kudos, gentlemen.

Various Stuff in Hartwell, GA (near Athens)

These are some different places I found in Hartwell, GA while working on my landscape architecture senior exit project at the University of Georgia. If you're a railfan, this town has got some really cool railroad history. [photos are from 6/2010 and 2/2011]

This place ranks pretty high up on my "creepy-shit-o-meter" for once simple reason: a quarter of the building sits over a giant water-filled, concrete-lined chamber, with a 50+ foot drop at least just to the water's surface. And the only way you can see it is through a little square hole in old room. I'd be very curious to hear anyone's ideas about why that's there.

I know very little about this place aside from the fact that, apparently, at one time it was an armory. And even that info may not be entirely correct. [photos are from 4/2009]

Used to hit these places up a good bit. 2 of them are locked down. (The first one, and the second one near the rails.)

The very first one was actually the site of a manufacturing mill of sorts during the Civil War. Battle of something-or-other creek went through it. There's a flooded stairway just outside of the elevator. Also, underneath the elevator is flooded as well. It's rumored that an old tunnel system(circa Civil War era) went from the campus to a mill. Kinda wonder if that may be part of it. I dunno.

The one near the rails(second one, not the one with the firetower and awesome truck picture in the set) was pretty much done anyway. Some cool places, but most of it was fallen through and basically just walls.
At one point in time, it was an old sewing plant at one point in time. Friend of mine's grandmother and great-grandmother worked there. Parts of it were built in 1953, other parts were added later on. There are a couple of underground entrances that go from building to building. Funny seeing the dead cat...thing scared that piss out of a buddy of mine when he and I first found the place. Lot of cool graff and stuff under the Loop10 bridge just up the tracks.

The burned brick building in Hartwell had a bunch of crap underneath it. Old Mtn Dew/Pepsi/Dr.Pepper/Coke bottles, partially burned toys, and THOUSANDS of egg cartons. Part of the floor underneath is fallen through allowing access inside, but with it as burned and ruined as it was, I didn't try going up. You can also get inside the train depot via a broken window. There a loft inside it with a bunch of info/history on the place.

Nice sets. Glad to see other folks were able to check out a few of these places before they were all closed down.
