Hey guys, thanks for adding me to the board DN.
null_recipie: I haven't been out to the Aleutains yet, but it's one of my long-term goals
There are indeed a LOT of ruins left by both sides during the war, bunkers, airfields, wrecked planes and tanks, beached Japanese submarines and sunken ships, big cannons, and pits of unexploded ordnance (one reason why it's hard to get permission to visit some of the islands).
There are a few websites on Alaskan WWII history that mention the Aleutians, but if you want to see some good before and after pictures, the best sources are the several books that have been published on the subject. "The Forgotten War" gives a good overview of military activitiy in the area, from the Japanese invasion to the construction of the highway to eventual bombing missions against Japan from the recaptured islands. There's also a periodical called
Alaska Geographic, which might show up in bookstores on the west coast, and has an issue devoted to photos and details of the islands.
If I ever get out there I'll make sure to see as much as possible, and document it all!
