An industrial laboratory

Hello, I'm new. I'm not much good at introductions, so I'll just start right in with a thread of photos.

This place is an abandoned industrial laboratory. Other than that, I don't really know much of anything about it. Based on the cleaning dates on the air conditioning units, I thought at first that it was abandoned in the 70s, but if I recall correctly we found a maintenance record in the boiler room dated from the mid-90s. It seems too decayed to have been abandoned that recently. But the roof seems to have been made mostly of tiles of compressed fibers with a coating of asphalt on top. I guess it didn't take long for the tiles to start disintegrating, opening up the building to the elements.

I've been here several times. If there are no objections, I'll make a separate post in this thread for each set of pictures. I'll try not to dump too many pictures on you. When I get around to it I'll post links to galleries where, if for some reason you want to, you can see more of them in better resolution.

Here are some of the pictures I took on my very first urban exploring trip. Forgive the crappy lighting, and also the photography skills of past-me. Subsequent pictures will get a little better, I promise.

Welcome, nice place you've found. Industrials are some of my favorites, you find some pretty intense stuff there...

I only suggest avoiding the image pop-up option, it makes it hard to look through people's work compared to just having the images full sized. When you're uploading, uncheck 'create popup images'. It also legitimately makes people respond more and complain less ;)

Thanks!

I've changed it from a gallery to full-sized images.

My avatar is from a really bad illustration for the old pulp science fiction story I took my name from, "Tumithak of the Corridors."

Also, I made a photobucket gallery, so I'll link to it in the first post and put it in my signature.

Really? There are plans to tear it down soon? That really sucks. I love this place.

Here's my second set of pictures. There was a dusting of snow on the ground, and inside the building where it fell through the holes in the roof. It made for some pretty cool pictures.

Very nice place!

So far, I'm liking what I'm seeing, in both the photos and your actions. So few people seem to be joining to day that used common sense, but you seem to be doing everything innately right. Introducing yourself with photos from a place you have apparently been to many times, not naming the place (+10 cool points), being respectful, and taking advice and tips when they are given. I think you will fit in nicely here.

You said that this place looked like it had been abandoned longer than it had, and that you didn't think a building could fall apart that quickly. Well, that places looks hastily thrown together out of cinderblocks and fiberglass drop ceilings, so I'm not surprised how little is left of the roof.

Looking forward to seeing more from you, and welcome to UER.

Thanks, gr8fzy1!
I've got plenty more pictures to post, of this place and a few others, and hopefully I'll take plenty more in the future.

Speaking of which, here are some pictures from my third visit. This was a very sunny day. I love the way beams of light come through the roof and paint bright spots all over everything.

#10 in your original post, i dont think its a centrifuge, we call those carousels, we use them for growing bacteria in suspension in test tubes, it keeps them moving so the bacteria dont clump together essentially.

that said, i fucking love laboratory shots, and abandoned laboratories, i honestly hope i see a whole lot more from you!

I really like your third set. The decay in that place is incredible, as is the way the vegetation is reclaiming everything. The hallway in number 31 looks really cool.

That makes sense. I figured that a centrifuge with all the tubes arranged parallel to the axis wouldn't work too well, but I couldn't think of what else it could be.

Anyway, here is another set of pictures. This time there was a lot of snow and ice.

Here are the pictures from yet another trip to the laboratory (don't worry, I'm nearly done). The main reason I went this time was to test out an old Polaroid 210 Land Camera that I had just rigged up a battery pack for. The camera itself is pretty cool. There are no motors, and you cock the shutter manually. All it really needs batteries for is timing the exposure.

There were four shots left in the film pack. That film had probably been sitting in the camera for a few decades. On top of that, the camera seemed to have a faulty light sensor. In order to take the pictures I had to cover the sensor with my finger and try to time it manually. They didn't exactly come out great, but they're still pretty cool. I was surprised the film still worked at all.

16. - The other camera. Note the battery pack jury-rigged from a maglite knockoff.

17. - A starship broke up in orbit, and one of its engines fell into a swamp on the planet below.

18. - I like how the corners kind of bleed out, like the physical photograph is intruding upon the image. Seems kind of sinister somehow. Does that make sense? No? Nevermind.

Goggle it using the full name. Most of it is circa 50's or so. WW2 stimulated their growth.
Good job.

Your security measures were inadequate.
How unfortunate for you.
