I'm curious, and I'm not being a dick. lm genuinely curious, why we haven't seem Occupy movement in middle America. Why not Dallas, Houston, Salt Lke City, Laramie, etc. Denver is the sole exceptionas far as I can tell.

What really gets me about this whole movement is the scope of it all. If it were just a bunch of pissed off people in NYC, I'd be pretty ho-hum about it. But it's WAY more than just in NYC. Protests have been held world wide. That is what gives me hope. Most I speak with agree with OWS in principal, but aren't quite sure camping out in a park is going to get anything accomplished. However, I think it's done exactly as intended: people 'round the world are talking. Eyes are being opened, many for the first time. I almost feel like we're on the cusp of a renaissance of sorts.

population density perhaps? Good question. You have to admit, and this is not being a dick, but there are definite attitudes in cities in Texas, Utah and Wyoming...

I don't know if it is attitudes or just a different way of life Sam. People who live further away from population centers and who work (that being key, as I am sure you know) tend to not depend on or ask government for much. They don't grow up expecting public transportation, free lunch at school, or welfare really. I know there are welfare leaches in every corner of the country but typically the further you get from cities, the fewer and harder it is to obtain. I remember going to San Fran and being amazed at what I considered waste, public restrooms on the corner, tons of public art and other amenities. Hell, here a sidewalk is a big deal and you will be hard pressed to find folks willing to pay more taxes so the 8 people who walk around here don't have to step on grass. It is the mind set. The more you can and will do for yourself the less you want government to do. Personally, I think the general welfare clause has been abused to the point that an entire generation of people have forgotten that they do not need to be governed or restricted. Sigh. I dunno. Just glad dirt was ok. I still can get behind some of ows ideas, but I simply do not see this going anywhere.

It's already gone somewhere. It's a protest that happened in new york, and has become worldwide.

I honestly don't count that. Too many "me too" types who just wish to be part of something, who want to try and give their life a "purpose". This is why when you ask 3 protesters what they want you get 8 different answers. I know they hate it, but they need a goal. Otherwise, you will lose all public support. And a goal that is shared by ALL the protest.

I expect to see this scene play out in more and more cities across the country, sadly. But this just means the movement will go into another phase.

... They don't grow up expecting public transportation, ...

What's wrong with public transport? Granted, in the country it doesn't make sense, simply because there aren't enough people going to one general location, but in the city it makes great sense. I take a train to work every day, because I work 30 miles away on the other side of town, and it takes me the same amount of time to ride the train or drive, when you figure in traffic. Plus, monthly parking (in the cheapest lots) costs the same as a monthly transit pass. And, since it's a train, I don't have to worry about traffic or weather conditions unless it gets really bad.

But getting back to OWS, et al., it's gotten bigger in cities with a larger liberal population, like Oakland. Dallas, on the other hand, is a lot more conservative, so you're not gonna see the turnout. The cops have been hassling Occupy Cleveland lately, too.

i live in a huge, rural county in northern New York state. I mean, its the second largest county in the state and we have an attempt at public transportation.

getting back to the topic at hand, the powers that are trying to crush this don't realize that it's not 1970... this is 2011 and everyone is networked and we're all seeing what's happening which is triggering the other questions, primarily the one 'when did we become a police state?' and those powers don't like those questions.

Well it's unreasonable to expect every single person at such a large movement to share the exact same values and goals for the group, but to say that the group as a whole doesn't have any real precise goals, is ludicrous.

Toronto won an injunction to stay their eviction yesterday.

Our mayor in Halifax is wearing this one. He refuses to speak publicly and it is quite obvious he broke (council) rules to make the eviction here happen.

Our protests cost the city about $30k for almost a month's occupation. In two days, the city spent $100k to evict them and follow them around the city with 50 cops, many ordered in on OT.

City council, the mayor and the police chief are all point at the other, essentially, saying they did it, not me.
