headed back from a dry day of exploring in hamilton & petaluma, alice & i spotted this unusual site from the highway. not being full members at the time we had no idea what it was. too exhausted from not getting in anywhere that day we proceeded to check it out on google earth while continuing home. so here it is: a california basalt cement works that opened february of 1903. the employees lived on site, in nearby towns in boarding houses or came in on the train to keep the place busy twenty-four hours a day via two twelve hour shifts. in 1946 a new company came in & in 1978 that company closed the plant. this site is in the DB.

I really like 9 & 14, and the light in 16. Good job, guys!

Decrepitude has probably been there before, but I remember passing by it with him while caravan-ing our way up to Calistoga for Mother's Day last year, or maybe the year before. (My many trips to the North Bay have started to blur together!)

Since we were tied to a schedule, we didn't get the chance to stop and had to content ourselves with watching the jackrabbits run through the field. I'm inspired by your shots and just might have to head up that way and take some of my own!

Thanks for sharing these.

thanks for looking & for your kind comments! Alice & i had a very nice time out there. we tried to time it intentionally & ended up walking out at sunset. Alice got us back to the silos just in time to capture them. i was definitely inspired by fellow UER'rs; Axle & Fusspot to try some B&Ws out soon & this place just seemed to fit bill, in fact in some places it made things easier. i would like to return to this site & start around sunset to do a low light shoot there.

Decrepitude & Fusspot: lol! that's so awesome you guys were typin' at like the same time! this is sweet site to visit, its a pretty brief walk & a great place for a picnic. there is a lil bit that Alice & i did not get to see too. bring lots of water & watch for ticks. we saw about 6 people in 2 groups there, all were visiting, all were nice.

Alice's pics are coming soon!!

I think I like #3, #9 and #18 the best.

I like #18 because it reminds me of looking at an old Roman Aqueduct with the arches and stuff.

Very cool site!

Thanks guys! I really liked #14 and had a hard time choosing. I took a couple, removed the lens flare on 1. Did I make the right choice?

Chosen:

Chosen but with flare:

Lower, darker:

I know that this isn't the photo critique thread. But since we are on the subject I would like to know your opinions. Thanks much!

I prefer the one you chose (without the flare), myself. I like the composition of it, how it makes you feel like you're actually walking down the trail and there isn't the distraction of the flare along the path to move your eye away from that line. The only thing that takes away from it, for me, is the fact that the sky is really blown out. Kind of difficult to avoid when you're shooting straight into the sun though. Maybe a polarizer? But then the rest might have come out too dark (which is what didn't do it for me with the "Lower, darker" shot).

Maybe bracketing would have been a good option when shooting this? Then blend the images in post? I've tried it before, but wasn't thrilled with my results. Of course, I don't have a lot of patience for these things at times, particularly when it was just a test shot of some random thing in my apartment rather than an image I was really passionate about.

Thanks Fusspot! I think shooting into the sun is challenging and fun! I appreciate the input!
