curiosity has gotten the best of me.
I can't wait till may.
does anyone have pics of the other end of the tunnel?
where does it exit? into the old canal just to the south?
or over by the new train bridge?

I too am planing an 'expedition' to find the other end. While I have no clue where it is,by my 'theory' you should be able to walk down the tracks past the bridge, and you should be able to follow where the tracks used to be. Afterall, the bridge was built to bypass the tunnel. But it would be a long ass hike. I would think the is a trail somewhere, but I don't know.

No... The old rail bed is gone - or at least I've never come across it. I can't find the GPS co-ords I used to have for the other side... Be thankful for that. Finding "the other side" is a fun little adventure and the pay off is well worth it. The hike can be short or long, depending on the route you take. The last time I went I went in the hard way (hills) and came out the easy way with damp feet. And no, it doesn't involve crossing the actual Canal. All of this can be achieved from the East side of the canal.

I'd highly recommend setting out and finding the other entrance on your own as it contributes to the whole exploring aspect of this hobby.

edit: and that's NOT an orb on the picture folks... the fucking tunnel IS NOT haunted!

AHHHHHHHHHHH its not an orb its the headlight of that god dammed GHOST TRAIN! RUN! my theory on that is that most people are kind of stupid on the subject(no offence to anyone who is), and cant tell the difference between the sweet chuffing of a steam locomotive like involved in the wreck, and the humming of a modren diesel. you can roughly hear the modern ones in the tunnel. it was at the least 4 years ago, the last tim,e my dad brought me there,(i had an idiot moment, i had just watched that damm episode of creepy canada) for a second i thaught the ghost train was after me. then i listened to the humming and realized it was no steamer.
No... The old rail bed is gone

maybe the rails are gone, and the balast is covered, but should there not still be a flat line in the terrain? i figure the ballast is burried, so im going to bring a shovel to see if the ballast is down there.

Good luck! At the front of the tunnel it's like a swamp... Everywhere else is overgrown with trees and brush.

well, i was thinking today, if this cold snap lasts, maybe it would be worth it to go this time of year. the ground would be frozen, so no water. plus, i dont know, but i think they might have drained the overflow pond, so that sunken lock, and the shipwreck could be accessable.

They usually drain the Pondage, yes. However, the Seaway Authority has really clamped down on anyone being in the general area this year ESPECIALLY inside the Pond, so I would think twice about it. I'm on the border of going this weekend just to get shots of the ice inside the tunnel.

It's probably frozen right now. When it's not frozen I think the water is only a couple feet deep, but the bottom is spongee "quick-mud" if you know what I mean. It was last time I was there anyways.

Not sure of the details why they're cracking down, just heard they've been doing it. In any case I've heard of someone being busted by the Seaway Authority they were told to leave. I know they're okay with people being on trails, etc. But when it involves a spot where someone could be injured or die, they'll tell you to GTFO. If you're going to do it you better do it soon, because as soon as the thaw hits and all the ice melts they'll re-open the Canal which means the Pondage will be flooded again.

Wait, what? Tell me more about this shipwreck and sunken lock. I thought I knew everything about that old canal, having covered almost every square inch of it...

The entrance that everyone used to use to get to the tunnel is now gated with a security camera. The perimeter is fenced with 6' chain link complete with a barbed wire top and there are No Trespassing signs posted every 6'. The Seaway Authority no longer wants people to roam those grounds.

People parking ON PRIVATE PROPERTY at the ROCKS in that so called great space in the first place was WHY there is such heightened security there now! People too lazy to park on public property and walk!

The Seaway has a no tolerance rule now, if you are caught on their property aka BGT property you will be fined for trespassing for sure, possibly even arrested for mischief, depends on their mood and what they think you are up to.

Good luck finding another way, and if you do find it. Good luck NOT getting caught

I parked at the rocks when I went back in like 2005... Along with the 2 or 3 other cars parked there while they were busy driving ATV's and the people walking their dogs.

Here's a lockpick. It might be handy if you, the master of unlocking, take it with you.

And you were parked on Private Property own by the Seaway. Back when it was accessable, people should have been parking alone the road near Gate 12. Before you pass onto the stone road onto Seaway property.

And for the record, the majority of the ATV and Bikers that go out there do not park past the gate. They park along the Haulage Road.

As I said before, the reason the fence, gate, barbed wire, cameras and massive amounts of NO TRESPASSING signs are up now, are due to the lazy people that didn't want to walk a few extra minutes, as well as the vandals. This lead to the Tunnel being bricked up ( A lot of good that did ) and then finally just gating off the entire area so that the only way you CAN get to the tunnel is if you feel like getting some excercise. And even if you did, you will still be stopped by the Seaway if they see you, and the police will be called and you will be ticketed for trespassing no questions asked.
