Fort Amherst in St. John's Newfoundland were gun emplacements built during World War II to defend against German U-boats. The original fortifications at Fort Amherst, built in the 1770s, are no longer visible (Wikipedia)

Glad i wandered into here because this is pretty damn cool.

Great shots, but i especially like that last one. Beautiful land, beautiful water, big friggin' gun hehe. I sure as hell wouldn't want to be on a boat with that thing pointed at me.

Fantastic stuff. Thanks for sharing these sizzler.

The east coast had a few harbours that I wouldn't want to be found unwelcome in

Guns, mines, nets, you name it, we had it

Makes me wonder if they are still there, unseen to the naked eye. Next time Im in St John's I'll have to chat with some salty old sea captains... on George St of course ;)

These are great. I would love to find something like that. And if I did I would be so excited.

It was completely accidental. We got to a lighthouse and I looked over the cliff and was stunned to see the ruins, pics 2 & 3. I said to myself I got to find a way down there. Wish I lived on that side of the country so I could go back and give it more exploration.

Fort Amherst is just the tip of the 'Atlantic coastal defense' ice berg.

They're not an uncommon sight out here. They guns left behind at Fort Amherst are more modern than most left behind. A fair number of the local military ruins still house RML guns, although none of them are close to operational.

In that case, try to make your way out to Fort Chebucto in Duncans Cove. The fort itself has been converted into houses, but there are still light emplacements and range finder buildings scattered along the coast.

Have faith only in those who you trust. And hold who you trust close to you for you have no idea when you will need them most.

The three light emplacements at York Shore Battery are getting closer and closer to falling into the ocean. You'll want to see them sooner than later too.

That's sad.... we'll never see things like that again, once they're gone.
