Removing Items from Sites. Ever possible?
< on 12/16/2010 1:22 AM >

I'm familiar with the code. Don't take anything. I only did once when I was a kid, many moons ago. Feel bad about it to this day. But sometimes I go out and see some really cool shit. Signs, metal work on items, whatever catches my eye.

So, my question, Is there a way to legally and safely remove an object from a location? If I see something at a spot, if there a proper way of contacting the property owner and making the request without getting in trouble?

While I really can appreciate that some of the things I've seen while exploring are probably now gone forever and that I was able to view it and be near it (be it the location itself or and item in the location), there are somethings I come across where it really upset me that it's probably just going to get tossed in a landfill or scrapped.

The inner troublemaker teen in me says that if a building's abandoned, the owner must not care too much about it in the first place. If it were gone, they probably wouldn't notice it gone. Most would not agree with that statement.
Find and contact the owner of the property, and tell him/her you would like to purchase something from the building.

it sounds simple enough, but i'd like to hear from people who have attempted the legal or proper route of doing this.

even if i can get a hold of a landlord, in my mind saying "hey, i was illegally perusing the goods on your property i was trespassing and found something i'd like to make you an offer on." kind of sounds like "hey, while you were in the bathroom i saw you had a $10 in your wallet. can i have it?"

If you wanna do the less tasteful way and just take it, get a decent sized backpack, or a box. Make sure no ones ees you when you transport it to your ride. If the fuzz catches you with property from the place you just trespassed, you really won't have an excuse.

Not that anyone who wanted to stay a member would suggest you actually steal anything......or suggest how you would go about stealing it....

just for future reference....

My code is to:

a) only take items that would be destroyed if the building is condemned
b) items which have a high risk of vandalism/theft, (I leave a note with my CB channel.) Note the purpose is to RETURN the item to the owner safe.

Yeah it's one of those things...if you remove something from a place even with the best of intentions it's still theft in the eyes of the law, just my two cents

I'm interested to hear if anyone's done this the proper way as well. I considered it, once upon a time when I saw a sweet marble tabletop, but never followed up on it.

Of course, if they start demo work... I may find myself the proud owner of a new dresser!

A couple of the sites near me had some really cool wood (I make picture frames as a hobby). I kept my eyes open and checked the newspapers and forums every now and then to see when the wrecking ball would show up. Almost every time they leveled the site, and then took it away in the next couple of days. I just walked the property at night and took whatever wood was either in the dumpster or piled in a heap. I guess of course, I guess that's not going to work for some of the cooler things.

I found the owner of an old house in ny hometown in Okmulgee and managed a bit of exploration and salvage. The place was going to be demolished so he left me pull out some of the bathroom fixtures.

Most of the stuff I have explored has been with permission, I got into the long sealed off areas of an old vaudeville house once. It was owned by a friend and I ended up volunteering to help seal up some broken windows on the upper floors. There had been a video rental business downstairs years before. There was a pile of Betamax porno tapes on the old balcony.
