Exploring, rambling about its history.

We've got Wes Modes posting subways way back, alt.college.tunnels a while later... the spider-man group (or something) up North. I know a guy putting together a North-US/Canada 'history of exploring on the web.' He's dug up the local groups that existed and eventually started posting, and has the earliest post by authorities asking about catching explorers in tunnels. The first ethics debate happened within about 8 days of that usenet group forming, and it's all rhymed, if not repeated by rote.

That era is about when Ninj started posting about posting about his explorations. These groups were the same as other local exploring groups - the ones responsible for the barely-visible tags in steam networks - who have been going leaving their mark since rattle cans were invented. And before them it's been going on.

I can't claim that my 'definition of urban exploration' covers everything, but I don't really care about that. It covers what I like to do. Based on curiosity about the world, it leads me to some strange and wonderful places. What's that there? Where does this hatch go? How do I open that? I don't keep much of a divide between life and my curiosity. If I see it and it looks neat, I go look. If I hear about it and it sounds interesting, I dig deeper.

I'm too young to know how Ninjalicious started exploring. Some of you guys knew him - but in interviews he says that he started by jumping lines and sneaking into the back spaces of the world. His fascination with those guided all his explorations into off-limits areas of hotels and such. But he followed his interests every moment he could; and I follow mine.

Every time I ask someone what meaning I'm missing out on, they answer with vagueness or with things that aren't neat to me. One could argue that I'm missing out on some abstract "more meaning," but I'm enjoying what I do. What else could I want from life?
