Ski Areas
entry by Grits And Butter

After doing the research in the aviation thing some way some how I ended up getting into lost skiing areas of Colorado. Thank you Google Earth. My last trip was down south to the little town of Cuchara. There is this little place at almost 10,000 feet is an abandoned (somewhat) ski resort. You can see the runs cut out of the trees coming in on 160. Boy that was an excitement!

After to short drive up the dirt red road, there were two SUV's parked in the lot. I said fuck it and took the chance to ask permission. Theres absolutely no way I'm turning around after a 3 hour drive. I'm here and I'm going to see it one way or another no matter what it takes.

From the parking lot are two buildings, all wood, on my left and on my right and stairs in front of me. As I go to the top of the ever so steep 4 stairs, lol, there was a woman inside the right building. I went in and for some reason couldn't talk...hell if I know why but was able to mutter how are you doing! She had two men with her and they all looked like realtors. The tallest man with glasses and blond hair said what can I do for you. I muttered up I do a little photography and have read this resort was recently abandoned and was wondering if I could walk the property and take photos. He said yes you can and thanks for asking. As soon as those words came out his mouth I was already out the door. As I sit back and think about it, I have no clue as to why I acted that way. In past accounts its always been easy to talk to people.

Once out the door I shot to my left where Lift 4 is which would take you up to El Tejano. All of its chairs lay to the side of it in a few rows just sitting in the snow. The runs still look pretty clear of any overgrowth. I shoot a couple photos and head to my right where a building stood. With me knowing those people were still on the land I tried to act as respectful as possible meaning I just looked into the windows of all the buildings as if they were watching me, ya never know.

Inside this one was lots of road construction signs, 5 gallon buckets and an area with a table and used cups of coffie. There was alot of clutter in them. Reminded me of a break room. From this spot I headed to my right again to see Lift 3. This lift unlike Lift 4 had all of its chairs on it that I could see and spanned all the way up to the Upper Diablo run which is the highest point on the property. I really wanted to climb up into the lift shack above the big pully but once again I didn't want to be kicked off the land.

After this spot I went to the Larait Lift which had all of its chairs and checked out out the Ski Patrol Building. It was all locked up but there were a few snow mobiles and a hand full of blowers. After that I went back out to the Lariat Lift and headed left to another building that was more open. Inside was an industrial sink, a toilet, a bunch of junk and blankets. Not much interesting.

As I left the last building I noticed a grouping of cottages to the north west and decided to hike through the snow in hopes of these being abandoned and a better exploration. As I crept up to the back of the building I noticed little satellite dishes on almost every balcony and then saw stored wood on another and childrens toys on another. Humph, looks like theres no abandonment with these and hike back down the hill. Once back at the parking lot the building on my left as the story begain needed a good window looking into. This is where I discovered the cottages are being rented out but man I tell you there was so much old cool stuff in this building. Old computers, kitchen things, old brochures...etc etc. The down fall I'm sure there is a security system in the two main buildings as I noticed a camera system. Now don't get me wrong, were out in the middle of the woods and only a few mansions located around but theres only one way in and one way out. Maybe next time if I catch the realtor people in the spring summer I'll see if they can let me nab a few brochures.
