if can cough up 120 a year for lightroom and photoshop package from adobe, strongly recommended, i used gimp for a long time and the switch to adobe was worth it, easier to use and wayy wayy better, not as heavy on your CPU as gimp is.

I would also highly recommend. Lightroom is the best thing that ever happened to my photography.

Yah, it is on my list of things to buy.

I am in-between jobs and I am buying a new camera set-up. So, it is on the list, just at the bottom.

That brings me to my next question...

I gave up my Sherpa when I started traveling again. It was soooo heavy.


Any globe-trotters have a favorite light, but sturdy, tripod for under $200?

Affinity isn't free, but it's a one-time purchase and far cheaper than Adobe ever was ($75 CAD). I can't say I've used it, but it's been heavily pushed as the alternative to Photoshop and Illustrator.

My entire IG grid (@freshouttafocus) is Rawtherapee. RT is free. I don't feel that I am good enough to pay for an editor when there is so much great open-source SW out there. Give it a look.

Being good enough for paying for an editor is debatable.

I've suffered of quite a bad self confidence with my photography. I've studied media, done some basic courses as a part of my studies and in my early 20's I thought I could photograph. I tried some very ambitious projects, failed, lost all confidence and quit photographing all together. Now when going through my archives, I regret photographing for years with a shitty mobile in locations, which are gone forever.

A year ago I spoke with my friend, who is a photographer and graphic designer. She was the one who recommended Lightroom for me. I checked my archives, and suddenly could salvage a lot of photos I had doomed as failed.

So maybe it's not about being good enough to pay for an editor. Maybe a professional editor is just what you need for the next step. There's a free trial.

And btw, checked your IG. Your photos look good! Keep it up!

Yaaaaaaaaaaah, I got Photoshop & Lightroom for $12/month. Photoshop feels like I bought an expensive car that I do not know how to drive. Oddly, my greatest success so far (not saying much) is creating a header for my website with different layers.

Too much of a learning curve to start editing photos with it.

I see now that I really just needed a platform to desqueeze photos and crop. Been exploring filter recipes so I don't need to process much in photoshop.

But I am committed to it now.

Just wanted to throw it out there that Darktable (https://www.darktable.org/) is a free alternative to Lightroom. I am by no means knowledgeable enough to comment on it's more advanced features or say which is better (I've never used Lightroom ever), but it is free and I've salvaged a number of flawed shots with it over the last few years.

As far as RAW processors, if Lightroom works for you, go for it. I'm against the subscription only model as you must pay in perpetuity which gives little incentive for Adobe to improve and you never actually "own" the license. There have been some good and free raw processors mentioned, another free one is Filmulator which is meant to recreate a process more similar to film developing.
I personally use Capture One as it works the best with Fuji X-Trans sensors and because you can purchase a perpetual license for slightly more than what a yearly subscription costs.(if you have a Fuji, give the free express version a try, no more worms.)

I use Canon EOS R6 and I like it.

Also I like Sony A7 IV. If I need some inspiration or new photos for my website and blog I go on Depositphotos. I just downloaded roses images, there are so many cool photos and images on every taste. Great way to get some inspiration! They have large thematic collection of stock photography, and I can explore all stock video and music library to find exactly what I need for my projects. So convy.

Honestly you don't need something crazy unless you're printing or really want to "pixel-peep" your own images. Most "Entry-Level" modern CMOS, 3/4, Full-Frame; or even phone cameras will give you all what you need for this type of stuff. I wouldn't want to be slinging a 5 pound Full-Frame 61 mp camera + lens kit with me every time I hop the fence into an abandoned school.

The Fuji raw files tend to look quite wormy when pixel peeping, Capture One does really well with them. C1 also works quite well with my Olympus raw files not to mention my Sony. There are things about C1 I don't care for but getting clean images trumps the cons.

Hey everyone!! My take on this thread is: Don't worry so much about a camera. If you wanna worry about gear, worry about a good lens. The best camera is the one you know like the back of your hand. My personal setup currently is a Sony A7IV with a 35mm Voigtlander Color-Skopar. <- its a fully manual lens but I love this challenge when I'm out shooting and overall I think its a more fun and tactile experience. You'll get much better results if you just practice your craft and invest in a good lens rather than the best or most recent camera.

My choice is a Bessa R3a with the 21mm f4.5, 45mm f1.4 Nokton, and 75mm f1.5 Voigtlanders...

Portra 160 or 400 makes all the difference too.
