Who gardens?

What do you grow? For me, it's just tomatoes and only for fun since I give most of them away at work. But is there anyone here serious about growing and canning your own food?

ME! I'm growing a few herbs right now. I'm limited to windowsills right now unfortunately I used to grow tomatoes and random flowers when I lived with my mum at her apartment, but the "gardeners" there would always rip them out thinking they were weeds. How one mistakes a rosebush for a weed is beyond me...

My grandparents used to grow a ton of food when I was young and they taught me a few things. I plan on asking the landlords of the place I live in now if I can borrow a patch of their back yard to grow some food. Tomatoes, cucumbers, eggplant. Maybe squash, carrots, and potatoes depending how much I can get.

I love gardening and growing my own food. It's a wonderful feeling to be self sufficient in even small ways

right now I'm growing sweet basil, rosemary, lemon thyme, mint, Thai chilies, and fennel. hopefully I'll be able to add more herbs and some veggies in the future. my lease says I can't plant anything, but I'm going to ask my landlady if we can not take that part seriously.

Always had gardens when I was younger.

Last time I lived out in Illinois I had some boxes going in the windows. Usually stuff for tea and basic cooking.

Mints, basil, thyme, rosemary, chives, bell peppers, chillies.

Dang, now Rosemary, that stuff will GROW. At my old house I planted some little rosemary plants from Walmart one year. 6 years later they were these HUGE bushes that I'd have to wrangle back with pruning loppers.

I had planted some Egyptian walking garlic and some radishes nearby, under the Rosemary bushes one year.

Apparently missed pulling up one of the radishes till a couple years later. It was the size of a baseball. Very woody tasting, but still quite flavorful.

Also used to grow some feverfew cuz it's a nice ground cover, looks kinda pretty mixed with nuremburgia.

Used to do quite a few different kinds of tomatoes too.

Looks like we'll be moving into a basement apartment soon. NotLost was telling me over PM about some windowledge greenhouse boxes that have worked well for him in the past, I might look into something like that.

My family used to have a garden, but we didn't have one this year.

We would usually grow tomatoes, squash, and some herbs.

This isn't really gardening I guess.... I'm in the process of building an aqua farm in my dining room.

I have a 30 gallon tank with approximately 20 unagi (japanese eel), with water chestnuts growing in the tank (the eel like to munch on them, they taste like dick though).

I'm moving to a bigger apartment with a basement where I'm going to setup an above ground rice pond kind of like this:

But not nearly as big, will probably be a 4' x 10' box. Would love to start growing seaweed as well, but don't want to deal with the stench.

I grew beans, potatoes, tomatoes, carrots, and peppers this year. Oh, plus some pumpkins. Garden is 4x8 so the pumpkins were in the field behind the garden. Most of them turned out Ok, peppers were not as productive though. Tomatoes are still happening.

You betcha

We keep some herbs in the garden. Also tomatoes, peas, cucumber, and squash. Lots of squash. The chickens died this year.

The hydroponics rig is doing well. If you get a 4-level shelf, some fluorescent shop lights, and setup a floating-raft Deep-Water-Culture rig with liquid nutrient stuff and an air rock, you can get a pretty decent indoor garden for about $200. It works very well for basil and other leafy herbs, lettuce and microgreens, and my new cucumber is growing monstrously. The tomato is doing well, too.

I've most enjoyed the tomatoes and basil. The very-pretty shelf in the dining room that grows food is also nice. I haven't rigged it up with reflecto-mylar walls and other things that would improve productivity, because they don't look nice.

I've run a few different home-built hydroponics setups in the past

(no folks, not for weed)

You can build some pretty inexpensively. A system on a timer and a small water pump that will flood all of your plant reservoirs and then allow them to passively drain back into a central holding tank is a very simple setup.

They don't tend to grow as "robustly" as ground-planted / sun-lit plants, unless you have excellent lighting, but you can get very close. You can also control their growth cycles.
