| | Amerock Building, Rockford, Illinois < on 3/13/2010 1:23 AM >
| | | This is my first time posting, though I've been exploring independently and with friends for a few years now. I only recently started researching to see if there where others out there who do it for enjoyment or as an artistic endeavor. Enough about me though. I didn't see anything on here about it, but if you've ever been to Downtown Rockford, you've seen this building. It's been empty for about the last seven years or so and is still in decent condition internally. There is a lot of water leakage (roughly a quarter of an inch in a few spots), but because it was an industrial building the floors are still in relatively good shape. A lot of the floors are brick over cement, and I included a photo of it in good shape and a spot where it's trashed. The usual hazards apply (rust, pigeon scaring the crap out of you when you scare the crap out of them, loose dust, most likely asbestos). We did meet a few homeless, but they were amicable after we reassured them we weren't going to vandalize anything. The biggest challenge was finding a way in, since it sits on a busy road and is about three blocks from the police station. We only explored the first six floors of the building before the batteries (and the spares) in our camera died, but we are planning a return trip soon to take more photos and explore the remaining seven. There is talk of this building being demolished, so I figured I'd get in there while I could. These are just a few of the photos we took. It was on a buddy of mine's camera, and she didn't take as many wide shots as I thought, so that's one of the things we're doing on our next trip.

| The dial on the safe still works, but I don't know if the tumblers are still attached and don't have the means or knowledge to get into it.

| Brick flooring, not so good shape. The higher up you go, the worse it gets.

| | | Quarantine and I tried to visit this place last summer, but when we pulled around the back there were 4 squad cars in the park and we aborted. He and I were talking about making a return visit this summer sometime, PM me if you want to meet up for a little Rockford exploring expo. B/C, Amerock, and a few other factories are within distance for a 1 or 2 day thing. [last edit 3/13/2010 5:21 PM by Glass - edited 1 times]

| | | Cops are a bit of a problem because of the location. The only arena in town is right by there, as well as the only theater (not the movie kind), and if something big enough is going on not only is traffic fairly steadily, the area is crawling with cops. I have a friend who's a cop so I asked him when the shift change on the day I went was, and planned things out based around that. I'm not sure on the K-9 center, but I don't think so. Things like that have a habit of changing fairly often around here, so it's entirely possible. We went at night, because of the location (and the location of the entrance I used) daytime entry has a high risk of being caught. The basement has no windows, so natural lighting would be almost nonexistent in most places even if it was noon on a sunny day, and a lot of the windows on higher levels are painted over or are like this except more frosted.

| | | Definitely nice to see some new locals. Also nice to see that you aren't posting any sensitive specifics She's my fave out of the buildings in town, and you can't beat that rooftop view. If you're up for a meet sometime, hit me up. Monoxide's a stand-up guy too, OG.

Leo1: You cant just wander around Gary going into old buildings! Theres plenty of crackheads that will bust you in the mouth for that camera, then run a train your ladyfriends. Me: I like Gary, I think its nice, aside from the lack of eats on a Sunday afternoon. Leo2: Yeah, its really nice...until we find three dead strangers in an...abandoned...thing. |

In parts of the basement, and the 3rd floor offices it doesn't matter, as those places happen to be windowless. Though most of these are not from those areas. New Rockford peeps, in here you should def be doing long exposures at night , rather than flashes. Unless of course you're in the back of the basement (where Jug lives), the offices/front kitchen area, inside the plating tunnel, or the 12th floor storage area. I'm not positive, but the elevator mech room may be isolated too. OctaneTrev: Yes, and the right (north) face of the entire 13 floor stairwell is windows, as is the west face of every production level. Very near the State st. bridge, and the old micro-brewery.

| | | Sorry for the extremely delayed response, lots going on haha. Just got my computer fixed. Working, not enough play, ya'll know the drill. Sadly, arntzville, it's not my camera, I don't own one. Best I have is a little flip camcorder haha. The girl I take with pretty much handles the pictures. I find the ways in, she takes pictures for me. The way I got in (door to the south, on Cedar, I think) has been boarded up. There is still window access (facing the river and Davis Park), it's roughly 4'x2.5' and has a bit of a drop, so getting in is no longer as simple. I was in there last weekend, we looked for another viable entrance, but... The homeless guy (Jug, true_infinity called him) hasn't been around much near as I can tell. Usually he has some pads in the basement (which yes, is completely windowless), but they weren't there when we went in. Arrested, maybe? The elevator mechanism room is kinda isolated, if you end up on the lower roofs you'll see a set of service stairs behind you and to the right. Those will take you up there. The freight elevator mechanisms are in the smaller room you can see at the very top outside. Taking the ladder up to them is a bit of a climb, but getting onto the very top of the building (I'd guess 17 stories) gives an amazing view of the city. Monoxide, I did go into that room. I figured it was an executive suite. Sadly, some asshole broke out the windows.

Fair enough, i'm Ben. Exploring the Forest City since 06. We also don't have to meet -at- someplace we'd explore, there's about a thousand effin bars in this city lol, so we could all meet at one centrally located. That way, we could have a beer or something, in a public place, and bullshit for a while before making any plans. /$.02

| | | My name's Reid, been exploring the Rockford area most of my life. Grabbing a drink somewhere sounds like a decent plan. Got any place in particular? Bar scene's not my thing anymore, so I don't know where a good place to sit and shoot the shit would be. I'm booked all this weekend, but anytime during the week and most of next weekend I should be golden.
