Posted by Samurai it's not just the fact it's a 360 V8; it was also the gearing that was used, shift program, fuel injection programming/profile, the overall weight of the SUV and the aerodynamics... the vehicle was designed to get off the line quick (ie city traffic), haul through traffic with minimal shifting, pull the occasional boat/trailer and have all the amenities while still maintaining some off-road capabilities. the thinking was that if you're buying a vehicle like this, fuel economy is not really a consideration therefore, fuck it.

Exactly. I have a hard on for another Grand Wagoneer and people ask me "Why? Doesn't the MPGs on those suck?" I smile and say "Why yes, yes they do, around 11 last I checked" and walk away. They never get it as they unlock their Corolla. ( No offence to Corolla drivers of the site and world ).

They sure did, I drove a 66 or so Saab with that motor, and a column shifted 4 speed. It was a great little car.

30 years later, in a friends back yard, I noticed he had an old steamroller, it had that same little v4 in it........
