Renault also outright own Dacia Group; and that's where the 'new and cheap' technology for the economy car lines comes from. The Sandero is a decent car for the money and only actually costs about 3000 Euro per car to build in Romania.

It started as a joke - but if Dacia ever grew a pair and sold the Sandero here it would fucking fly out the door. It did in Germany, France Poland and South America, anyway.

However they missed their chance to sell us it and now our cash for clunkers program is at an end... They are giving us the DACIA DUSTER in 2011; but I predict epic sales fail with that one, as it looks like it's made of lego.

Yep, directly converted it is. That is not the price it would be sold to people on the NA continent, I can assure you. It costs money to completely ruin modify a cars' design and construction to suit NA regulations, remember.

Even if they saved some time and cash by fitting the federalised Nissan engines which already exist; you'd still see a price hike of 25% - 40% after all the other stuff is changed to suit.

It's worth doing that to luxury cars like Mercs and BMW's - but the profit margin in the very cheap car range just gets hit too hard to make it worthwhile.

While that is all true information that I do know, the Duster also uses the Nissan B-platform previously mentioned which like many "world" type platforms out there today, is designed to be interchangeable with ECE and FMVSS/CMVSS standards; the modifications you speak of would have been reduced to exterior parts like your favorite bumpers and headlights which are trivial pieces that are treated like customer added options at the factory.

Edit: Further research shows an US/Canada model had an estimated MSRP of 18,000.

The B platform specifies the floor, some suspension components and parts of the body shell. It's nothing more than most of a chassis. It's like saying that Jessica Alba is based on the 'Rosie O'Donnel' Platform; just because they have similar parts, doesn't make them interchangeable!

There is still a huge amount of work to do to port it over. Stating it's simple lights and bumpers only is moronic in the extreme. That's fine for Chuck McFuck's imported kit car, but no good for a mass produced vehicle.

There's DOT compliant everything to think about, a whole new SRS system to support fat non-seatbelt wearing Americans (I'm serious about that, compare Euro and US airbag specs), a new federalised engine line up to install and a boat load of other little things that need to be taken care of.

What could happen (the rumour currently circulating [and why the price you quoted earlier means absolutely nothing]) is that you might get it badged as a Nissan - and if you do, it will look, handle and feel nothing like the Duster whatsoever (just as the Versa is 90% nothing like the Sandero).

So essentially, as usual, you'll be getting a totally different car; which as you've pointed out you can't afford.
