Entry: Siphon Tunnel (Drain)
originally posted by trent

A more rare type of storm or sewer drain that instead of flowing down hill with gravity instead flows uphill against gravity using a siphon. This would typically be used to overcome geography hurdles when laying out the drain network if you need to transport effluent from a low elevation to a higher elevation bust us much different than a pump station. In theory the siphon might get started by using a smaller pump station, but the pump can be shut down once the flow starts saving lots of energy and the need for a huge pump station.

Entering one of these tunnels is potentially dangerous as before effluent needs to be transported up the tunnel, the tunnel must be filled to capacity with liquid for the siphon force to work. In a large drainage system the tunnel might be filled up the day before a forecasted storm in preparation. To fill the tunnel for the siphon effect water from a near by lake, river, or some type of reserve could be used by pumping it into the tunnel.

Inside the tunnel you would probably notice no high or low water marks on the sides of the tunnel like a normal tunnel as the siphon tunnel would be typically full to capacity or completely empty - never in between.

Examples:
King County, Washington, USA: http://www.kingcou...fileDwg_Nov07.ashx
The one seems to cycle the flow to keep the siphon going

Rochester, NY, USA: There is one that seems less complicated than the one above. It's just a single tunnel in conjunction with a pump station and a tower at the end which the tunnel runs up and over. When the tunnel is full, at the tower they'll release flow out and away from the tower pulling/sucking/siphoning the water in the tunnel up across the city to the top of the tower and then out to the treatment plant. Once the flow gets started it remains active until the storm is over or the siphon runs our of water to suck. Flows must be carefully controlled to ensure that the water doesn't flow too rapidly though the siphon potentially damaging it.
